'Let's pull the plug and solve this,' Danielle Smith says, calling for immediate federal election

When Premier Danielle Smith looks at Ottawa this time, as the federal Liberals desperately try to regroup, she sees “somebody who is trying to shuffle their way out of chaos.”

You can’t do that. The only way you can solve this kind of chaos is to get a mandate. It is to have an election. I think there’s a real danger if this just drags on and on and on for months when we’re right in the middle of a very serious threat from a biggest trading partner, the United States.

Chrystia Freeland pegged by some Liberal MPs as Justin Trudeau's successor if he resigns

Among the Liberal MPs publicly calling on Trudeau to step down, a small number have come forward to throw their support behind Freeland.

By design or by circumstance, her time of resignation has put her into the spotlight. And she appears to be the person around whom the caucus members can rally behind.

Ontario Liberal MP Chandra Arya said.

What a dumb move that would be.

💉Family files lawsuit after man received MAID while out on psychiatric ward day pass

The family of a man who received medical assistance in dying while out on a day pass from a Vancouver hospital psychiatric ward has launched a legal challenge alleging Canada’s current laws are unconstitutional because they fail to protect suicidal and mentally ill people.

The notice of civil claim filed Friday in British Columbia Supreme Court also alleges the 52-year-old’s MAID procedure two years ago was a wrongful death. It accuses Ellen Wiebe, the high-profile doctor who the suit claims helped him end his life, of alleged malpractice.

Poilievre writes to GG calling for House recall, confidence vote after Singh declares he's ready to bring Liberals down

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has written to Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, imploring her to "use your authority to inform the prime minister that he must" recall the House of Commons so a non-confidence vote can be held. This move comes in light of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh publishing a letter stating his caucus "will vote to bring this government down" sometime in 2025.

Poilievre told reporters on Parliament Hill on Friday afternoon he was taking this step "so the prime minister can judge whether he stays in power."

🇺🇸 Smith urges Ford to ‘walk back’ energy threat in possible U.S. tariff showdown

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is being urged to “walk back” any discussion of cutting off energy exports to the United States in the event of a tariff war with incoming President Donald Trump, as other premiers express concerns about the impacts of escalation.

The call comes from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith whose province has rejected the idea of using oil and gas exports as a bargaining chip in the ongoing Canadian effort to avoid tariffs by the incoming Trump administration.

Singh says the NDP 'will vote to bring this government down' in new letter

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his caucus "will vote to bring this government down," sometime in 2025.

In the letter, addressed to Canadians, Singh says he will "put forward a clear motion of non-confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons," and "give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them."

"I called for Justin Trudeau to resign, and he should," Singh said, not specifying how early into the 2025 sitting this motion moving to defeat the prime minister's Liberal government could be advanced.

📈 Lost Canadians bill could create 115,000 more citizens, says parliamentary budget officer

A bill to reinstate rights for what are known as lost Canadians could create around 115,000 new citizens in the next five years, according to a report by the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

The report, published on Thursday, also estimates that it will cost the government $20.8-million over five years to implement the change, with $16.8-million coming in 2025-2026. The PBO presumes the law will come into force in April.

Bill C-71 was introduced by the government earlier this year after an Ontario court ruled it is unconstitutional to deny citizenship to children born overseas to Canadians also born outside the country.

Trudeau holding talks with cabinet, party leaders about whether to step down

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is holding discussions with cabinet ministers and senior party leaders about stepping down early in the new year, but close confidants have walked away from these conversations with starkly different conclusions about where he stands.

One confidant, who spoke directly to Mr. Trudeau this week, said the Prime Minister believes he can no longer continue after Chrystia Freeland rocked the government with her surprise resignation as finance minister and deputy prime minister on Monday.

However, a second source who also spoke to Mr. Trudeau, said the Prime Minister does not want to go and remains motivated to lead the Liberals through the headwinds they face.

Several cabinet ministers are campaigning to persuade Mr. Trudeau to stay and overcome mounting calls to quit. Mr. Trudeau was prepared to step aside on Monday but was talked out of leaving, a third source said.

Canada tightens immigration point system to curb fraud tied to job selling

Temporary foreign workers who apply to become permanent residents through Canada’s immigration system will no longer get additional points if they have a job offer that’s supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), Immigration minister Marc Miller said Tuesday.

The move will reduce fraudulent activities in Canada’s Express Entry System, which is an online platform that manages Canada’s skilled immigration programs, the minister said at a press conference.
