Putin’s systematic crackdown on political opposition and civil society paved the way to the war of aggression against Ukraine which caused immeasurable suffering to its people. Russian political reality is on full display in the treatment of Alexey Navalny, one of the opposition leaders.
Two years ago, Navalny was arrested in Moscow immediately upon his return from Germany where he was recovering from the Kremlin’s attempted assassination by Novichok poisoning.
Since his arrest, he has constantly been under tremendous pressure from the prison authorities, often isolated in a punishment cell and deprived of basic necessities such as medical care. Despite all the repression and intimidation, Navalny as well as many other brave people in Russia continue to speak up for peace and freedom, the values at the very heart of our community.
Having the privilege of living in London, where no one gets arrested for simply calling a war ‘war’, like Alexey Gorinov in Moscow who has recently been sentenced for almost seven years for this ‘crime’, we see our role in making the voices of all political prisoners of Russia heard.
We have compiled and translated into English their speeches, letters and interviews and invite everyone committed to peace and freedom to read them together during our demonstration in the centre of London.
Throughout the demonstration, there also will be an open mic, so we encourage you to prepare you own speeches in English language (but if you can’t, Russian language is also ok).
After the demonstration, we will also gather indoors nearby to write letters to political prisoners of Russia.
