🗣 Does TON Have a Future? The Gateway 2024
Hey guys, hope you haven't forgotten about me and missed my musings. The #crypto conference season in Dubai has come to an end, which lasted for two weeks and included Blockchain Life, Binance Blockchain Week, The Gateway, and hundreds of side events around these conferences.
Key Highlights:
Blockchain Life - I wrote a review about it here. A top-tier event with a large number of participants (13k+).
🔸 Binance Blockchain Week - International in scope. Numerous booths from blockchain representatives. Solana, Tron, Ton, Thor Chain, Mantra, and of course, BNB were presented. Binance, as a centralized exchange (CEX), is the dominant monopolist at its own event, not allowing other exchanges in. Projects that interact with Binance in one way or another are either sponsors or participants at this conference.
💎 The Gateway - A more exclusive conference for projects closely related to TON or Telegram. Many builders/creators of mini apps on Telegram with plans or intentions to integrate the TON blockchain into their projects. The organization of the event was impeccable, from registration to speaker presentations, sound and video quality, and full, delicious lunches. A top-tier venue.
What Happened at The Gateway?
I met many owners of young crypto startups, who are passionate about their ideas, building Web3 products, and trying to connect with TON Foundation, TON Society, and other quasi-TON organizations to get support, grants, or at least some marketing help from the blockchain. As a relatively seasoned participant in the TON community, I didn’t spill the harsh truth to these young talents 😏
In general, the booths could be divided roughly in half between projects owned by or funded by quasi-TON companies like TOP and those who are navigating the market independently without any help from the blockchain's representatives.
It was amusing to attend one of the closed parties where only project founders who had achieved success without the help of the "TON Mafia" gathered. I fondly recall jokes about the coalition... 🤤
What’s Next for TON?
TON representatives on stage spoke a lot about this year’s achievements. When it came to the future, there seemed to be a clear contradiction. Some speakers were betting on DeFi products and pledged to support utilitarian projects, while others suggested that the main narrative for 2025 would be meme coins and launchpads, which replaced the previous craze for “tap-to-earn.” They even launched TON Memelandia with a prize pool of $1.25 million.
By the way, the tap-to-earn trend faded as quickly as it emerged — it's practically forgotten now. The #TAP2Earn concept is not just out of fashion; it's downright cringe. But new derivatives have appeared, such as #Learn2Earn, #Photo2Earn, and even #Blink2Earn 😎
