Two peasant boys have settled on a large stone jutting out from the pond, ready to go fishing. Their figures and the boat they used to reach this rocky islet are positioned toward the right edge of the canvas.
As with many of Makovskaya’s works, this scene isn’t meant to evoke melancholy or pity. Instead, filled with a sense of calm, her painting quietly invites the viewer to appreciate the unhurried rhythm of rural life.
