how to determine integrity of external hard drives? and what file system to use (mac/Linux)
Finally with some time at home for lockdown I have managed to do some spring cleaning in my computer and closet. got rid of excessive copies of old files and ready to start fresh.
I have some external hard drives I'd like to use but I am unsure about how reliable they are. I've gotten files I need from them so I can format or do whatever.
how to determine integrity
1. How do you know how trustworthy a hard drive is?
2. Is there some kind of routine check I can run once in a while to catch problems?
2. Do you have any role for less than perfect drives in your set ups?
3. Particularly, I have an 8 TB WD My Passport external. But one partition will not mount; otherwise functional. Still under warranty.
what file system(s)?
- Currently I am using Mac OS but I will likely switch to Linux in the next few years so if there is a way to consider compatibility with that I'd prefer it
- Strong preference for encryption
I appreciate any thoughts. I know this stuff is discussed here but sometimes it's a bit above my level of comprehension. Any missing details let me know I will provide; I am trying to be brief.
