Quran and the Question of Free Will
Plenty of people come on this sub to ask about the fate/free will question, and I recently heard a tafsir explanation of the following ayah from Surah Al Nahl which I wanted to share with you all.
Surah Al-Nahl (The Bee) Ayah 75: **Allah presents an example i.e. a slave (who is) owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allah ! But most of them do not know.**
The first slave is in complete control of the Master and cannot exercise anything. He can’t pick what he eats or how many bites he will take, for example. That’s one kind of example. The second slave (though Allah didn’t specifically use the word slave) is wealthy with good wealth that especially came from Allah, and he/she spends from it. Thus this means he/she is free. He/she spends for Allah. Now we have two slaves; one with no capability and the other with all capability. The one with no capability is obviously not doing anything on their own, but the other who can do anything still chooses to spend on Allah. Can these two be counted as the same? You have an opportunity to earn great honor by willingly doing an act for Allah's sake. All other creatures of Allah don’t have the option to spend in the path of Allah. They’re completely, absolutely owned, like the bee. The human has a choice and that is why he/she is honored. Human being is created in the best possible form. As soon as you realize you’ve been given honor, you’re supposed to say Alhamdulillah. Most people don’t think like this. Most of humans have no idea.
