I think we should rephrase a general strike as a "National day of protest" or something like that.
I've been shopping both ideas with my friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances. This is a very broad group of people who come from all walks of life. The day of protest gets much more traction than a strike. I think many Americans still view a strike in a negative light. Where as a day of protest seems to gain more support.
To my centrist liberal friends, a strike is a punitive act. And is only perpetrated by someone who is far too radical. Where as a day of protest appeals to their privilege I think.
I have literally nothing to base this on outside of pure anecdotal evidence. But it seems to be a better way of framing it.
