Diluted bleach water disposal

I have two 55 gallon drums of water that each have 3 tablespoons of bleach for preservation that I need to empty that are in my garage. I am wondering if this will kill my grass if I empty them in my yard or how I should dispose of this water safely without killing my lawn. Thanks!

I have come into a lot of cans of Wolf's chili with no beans---what do people do with it?

It's kind of mushy beef, not a bad taste, but I'm not finding recipes by googling. It's a good source of protein but you wouldn't want to eat it straight.

Edit to Add: Wow, so many ideas! I'm feeling a little better about storing these cans. I'll skip the medical cleanse, but the other ideas are very practical. Thank you.

Wondering what gas mask to get

I've been thinking about getting a French ARFA gas mask but reconsidering as I've seen some reviews that say the rubber is brittle and that its not durable. I'd like to spend under $100 but I'm not sure It'll be possible. I also considered this belgian mask but changed my mind because the store says it's for display only. Any recommendations for a budget friendly mask would help, thanks

Hawaii Preppers

Any preppers living on the island of Oahu? Several of my colleagues are interested in discussing unique prepping concerns/needs due to living in Hawaii and sharing perspectives. Love to be able to reach out and brainstorm with others in the same situation. Thanks.

What’s the best type of E-Reader for Prepping?

I know good old fashioned books are one way to go in a real scenario, but there are just so many benefits to having some sort of PDF reader. You can fit literally thousands of books on a small lightweight device. I’m curious as to what you guys think would be the best reader device and why?

My thoughts are something with a replaceable battery, internal battery backs can fail and likely are not user replaceable. Also probably some sort of black and white only screen for battery life, however maybe being backlit would be a real benefit in some situations. Thing needs to be small and tough also.

Is an old smart phone a good idea? Or a kindle? Something entirely different?

Thoughts?

Long term food preps/options for veggies and fruit and general suggestions

I'm putting in a few months worth of long-term food for my family, but I want to keep it simple and budget friendly. I'm putting the food into gallon mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and storing them in a quasi-hidden location in my house (not the pantry). I'm bagging dried split peas, dried lentils, beans, white rice, sugar, hard white wheat, oats, instant coffee and powdered milk. I've been buying some Auguson farms carrots and freeze dried fruit for nutritional variety, but they're pricey. What are my other options to keep the diet fairly balanced, if any and is any of the stuff I'm bagging not a good idea (i.e shelf life of less than 5 years?) Thank you all in advance.

Anyone have P&G Purifier of Water ?

I saw some youtube videos where this was used to separate clean water from muddy water and found it interesting.

I assume this cannot be used for disgusting city runoff water, right?

Does anyone have it?

The CDC has a glowing review here. Here are some excerpts:

> The P&G™ product is a small sachet containing powdered ferric sulfate (a flocculant) and calcium hypochlorite (a disinfectant)

> To treat water with P&G™, users open the sachet, add the contents to an open bucket containing 10 liters of water, stir for 5 minutes, let the solids settle to the bottom of the bucket, strain the water through a cotton cloth into a second container, and wait 20 minutes for the hypochlorite to inactivate the microorganisms

> The flocculant/disinfectant powder P&G™ has been proven to remove the vast majority of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, even in highly turbid waters. P&G™ has also been documented to reduce diarrheal disease from 90% to less than 16% incidence in five randomized, controlled health intervention studies.

> P&G™ also removes heavy metals—such as arsenic—and chemical contaminants—such as pesticides—from water

Question about water storage

I’m getting started on water storage and bought a 7 gallon aquatainer to get started. I’m going to clean it with drinking water and dish soap to get rid of any residue first.

Would you recommend filling my container with drinking water or tap water? I saw for people who used tap water on YouTube they also bought a water treatment liquid that preserves the water for 5 years. I was planning to rotate mine once a year if I used drinking water. Would I still need to treat my drinking water? How do you guys have yours set up?

Also I’m curious about getting water from the local park.. we have a filtered water thing installed in our park where you can place a bottle down, press a button, and it’ll fill from the top. However I’m not sure how used the filters are and how often they replace the filters. Anyone get water from the park?

Edit: I use a built in filter in my fridge for drinking.

Bee keeping for preppies?

Has anyone considered bee keeping for prepping, honey doesn’t go bad, pollinate the orchard and garden, used as a sugar substitute, lots of calories, I don’t see a down side.

Edit: I didn’t mean to write preppies, but I can’t fix the title.

What do you think will be the next incoming crisis?

Hey guys,

I'm currently recovering from this mess. My preps (both physical and mental) are being stocked up. My new job requires me to be highly mobile, so its' not going to be much.

I'm just wondering what signs I should look for towards the next crisis and how I may be able to mitigate it (and some tips about buying land- assuming I might be able to afford it in the next six years).

I hear about inflation (food, land, etc.) a lot, I don't know if it's overhyped, I'd expect a bit of it since gas prices are rising again.

I've heard plenty about civil disturbances.

I'm sure that I skipped over a few.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Seed storage

What are some methods for long term seed storage? Do you think it’s worth keeping seeds for the chance of growing crops in a long term scenario?

Should fitness be considered a high priority prep?

The CDC released a study today indicating 78% of those hospitalized by Covid are overweight or obese. . I myself am (or was) about 20 pound overweight when all this started, but I’ve lost 11 pounds of it over the last few months because of the suspected link between weight and poor outcomes. This has gotten me thinking a lot more about whether physical fitness is a high priority prep, and if it’s one that folks might be ignoring over other things like gadgets and weapons. Do you have a fitness regimen, and if so, is it a prep to you? This pandemic flipped my thinking around in a big way.

Amateur question: Is there a way you can use a solar generator to off-grid power hogs in a house?

TL,DR: Can I use a Bluetti 2000wh solar generator in my attic with panels running to the roof to off-grid my two biggest power hogs: two PCs in an upstairs office and a downstairs home theater? Is it possible to accomplish this without using an extension cord because apparently none are supposed to run through walls?

So I recently got stuck in the Austin storm, and it maybe wasn't as bad as it looked except we kept running out of phone and tablet charge to entertain ourselves while huddled under eight blankets and eating the paltry amount of fritos and bottled water that we rationed in our hotel until our rebooked flight and kept having to go to the car for hours to recharge the devices. When I got home I started looking into generators and solar chargers for my phone. I saw a solar generator pop up as I was looking for solar phone chargers and a thought occurred to me, but combing reviews and posts, I haven't seen this exact use case and before I plow ahead with it, I wanted to make sure I'm not missing any pitfalls, and I need a solution for running power. I live in a sunny place and have a roof facing the correct direction, but I don't want to pay the multiple tens of thousands it would cost me to go solar because of the size of my house. My electric bill is low anyway: only about $75/month for a big house (another reason solar doesn't make sense). However, my bill used to be only about $25 before I really expanded my smart home devices (can't fix that with solar unless I wire it to the box, I get that) and I expanded my PC and home theater setup, as well as my wife started working from home due to covid so we now have two PCs running morning until night. In other words, the biggest daily power hogs are the home theater power strip and the pc power strip. They use about 700w if running at the same time, but they usually don't run at the same time, so I think that the charge gained from the sun while running should theoretically be enough to keep them powered all day off grid most of the time in our area. One is upstairs one is downstairs. Both the upstairs and downstairs have wires running to them through walls for direct internet. My thought was to sort of do a janky solar setup this way: buy a Bluetti 2000wh generator, put it in the attic, mount some smaller 120 solar panels to the roof from Amazon, keeping them out of sight from the exterior (important to my wife) by running the cord straight down from the roof into the attic, and maybe use the existing wall holes for internet to run electricity (how do I do this too because apparently there's no extension cord that can run through walls?) from the unit to the home theater downstairs and the pc setup upstairs, thus eliminating the two biggest power hogs. My break even for this just on raw energy use is many years, but I feel that it would be worth it just to have the generator upstairs running on solar so that if we needed it for an emergency, we could just unplug the home theater and PCs from it and repurpose it immediately for, say, the refrigerator. Is there a way to make this work?

Building a DIY "Big Berkey" Water Filter for 1/4 the Cost

The Big Berkey has become sort of beloved in the prepper community, and it's basically "the standard" in free-standing, home water filtration systems. But when you break it all down, the whole thing pretty much just consists of the filter elements, and a handy container/presentation that you put the filter elements in.

So I decided to build my own, and use 5 gallon food-grade buckets instead of stainless steel containers. Right there I was able to save around $150 by using plastic buckets and a cheap spigot. To take it a step further, I shopped around to find a less expensive alternative to the pricey Berkey filter elements. While still not dirt cheap, I found ones with stated specs that are very comparable to the Berkey. This saved an additional $63.

Pics of the completed system

Complete video walk-through, including specific materials list and cost breakdown

I'm quite happy with my final product, and I like that it holds almost twice as much water as the Big Berkey. Even if I went with the true Berkey filter elements, I'd still prefer my bucket system because of the lower cost and higher capacity. Plus, if the thing ever got damaged, another 5 gallon bucket only costs a few bucks.

High-lumens red lens flashlight for land nav?

Heading to a course soon with some serious night land nav for extended periods of time. Already have my headlamp so i'm good to go as far as map reading. Looking for something I can use to spot a point in dense vegetation or thick brush (Don't worry, not going to be scanning around with it... just something I can pull out in a pinch). For previous land nav courses I had a high powered streamlight that I took a red lens filter from the elbow light- trimmed the edges down, then taped to the top of it so I had some pretty serious red light. That ole trick won't fly for this course, so I'm looking for something that has a red lens built in or attachment that doesn't look jerry rigged.... Appreciate any help or suggestions. (And for obvious reasons I can't have a re-chargable one, its gotta have regular or lithium batteries I can carry extras of).
