🇷🇺🇪🇹 H.E. Russia's Ambassador to Ethiopia Evgeny Terekhin’s interview with Fana BC on the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia

Key points:

💬 Ethiopia is one of Russia’s key partners in Africa. Since 1898, when diplomatic relations between our countries were established, they have passed a long and great journey in both good and bad times, and throughout this period we have managed to build strong cooperation in a wide range of spheres.

💬 We are happy to see a high level of current political contacts between our two countries. We continue to actively develop our cooperation not only in the political sphere but also in other areas.

💬 The best achievement of our 125-year diplomatic relations is the truly cordial relations between our states. Regardless of what governments were in our countries, relations between our two peoples have been growing steadily over the course of these 125 years and are based on mutual trust, respect, fraternal friendship and sympathy.

🇷🇺🇪🇹 On April 27, H.E. Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin had a meeting with UNESCO Representative to Ethiopia Dr. Rita Bissoonauth. The parties discussed potential areas of cooperation in the relevant spheres.

🇷🇺🇪🇹 On April 26, H.E. Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin visited State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia H.E. Ambassador Birtukan Ayano. The parties discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest concerning cooperation between the countries in different spheres.

🇷🇺🇪🇹 On April 25, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, received Oleg Ozerov, Ambassador-at-Large and Head of the Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum.

Ambassador Mesganu expressed the gratitude of the People and Government of Ethiopia to the People and Government of Russia during Ethiopia’s difficult times.

He reiterated Ethiopia’s continued commitment to further deepen multifaceted Ethiopia-Russia relations.

The State Minister thanked Ambassador Ozerov for gracing the “Enough with War – Let’s Celebrate Peace” ceremony that heralded a new era of peace in Ethiopia.

He said development and poverty reduction are priorities of the Ethiopian government after cementing the hard-earned peace and stability in the country.

Ambassador Ozerov briefed the State Minister on the preparations for the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit, due to be held in St. Petersburg on 26-29 July 2023.

💬 Yesterday, the US Department of State congratulated me on International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace in a personal way – by publishing a detailed paper that was entirely devoted to me!

I believe I am probably the only head of the Foreign Ministry Press Service with a personal page on the websites of two nuclear superpowers – my homeland Russia and now the United States.

The US foreign policy office has not mastered this new genre for free. The Maria Zakharova profile was compiled by the Global Engagement Centre at the Department of State. Thanks to The New York Times, we know that $120 million were allocated for this, including my profile.

The Department of State claims that I spread a fake item about Osama Bin Laden’s reception at the White House. This is untrue. Any fake item is deliberate. Speaking on Rossiya Channel 1 on October 30, 2017, I made a mistake by mentioning the photos of Bin Laden and members of the Taliban, but I immediately wrote in my Facebook account about this. I clarified that I had two different historical facts in mind.

The first fact. Ronald Reagan’s meeting with the Mojahedin at the White House (this post was written in 2017 when the US was still fighting the Taliban (that included the Mojahedin) in Afghanistan. The US’s shameful flight took place four years later). Senator Rand Paul, Reagan’s reputable fellow party member admitted that the US was arming Bin Laden for fighting the USSR.

The second fact. Bin Laden’s photo in The Independent under the heading “Anti-Soviet warrior puts his army on the road to peace.”

Based on the most stringent requirements for journalists and officials for spreading false information, I decided not to limit myself to one post and went to the studio of the same programme, “60 Minutes,” and talked about all this on November 9, 2017.

Further on, I’m accused of “lying” about “the Anglo-Saxons needing war at all costs, and their favourite method of resolving their own problems includes provocation, disinformation and threats.”

The fact that the United States needs a war at any cost is backed up... by the State Department and White House officials.

This report mentioned Bucha and “forcible deportations” separately. Where are the verified lists of the people who died in Bucha? We have been asking this question for months, but what we get instead of an answer is silence or aggressive mumbling.

With regard to forcible deportations, Russia is not moving anyone out by force. Millions of refugees from Donbass are fleeing from Ukrainian and the West’s bombs and missiles. They are not fleeing to Poland, but to a safe and secure place, Russia. As for the “children issue,” I think the recent Arria-Formula Meeting at the Security Council on this issue could well disavow all accusations. Or, the people behind this opus did not watch it, maybe because their NATO allies blocked the broadcast? It’s all right, I will share the recording, and even in English. And if that is not enough, here's the full video of Maria Lvova-Belova's news conference. Let them take a look.

Truth be told, they could have come up with something more serious for $120 million, or, maybe just wire the money to Zelensky for drugs.

☝️ Unfortunately, this shows once again that the motto of American foreign policy is hoaxes, fakes and insults. On top of that, it’s a mediocre job even though done for an inordinate amount of money.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at the UN Security Council open debate on the Situation in the Middle East, Including the Palestinian Question

📍 New York, April 25, 2023

Read in full

Key talking points:

🌐 The Middle East is currently going through a profound transformation that is unfolding in a way that is rather contradictory.

🔹 We attribute priority importance to building a sustainable and inclusive security and cooperation architecture in the Middle East and promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue.

☝️ We welcome the positive changes that even a short time ago seemed so difficult to achieve. I am referring, first and foremost, to the restoration of relations between Saudi Arabia and Islamic Republic of Iran with the mediation of the People’s Republic of China, the plans to bring Syria back into the Arab family – something we have been working on for a long time – and the normalisation of relations between Damascus and Ankara, which has begun with Russia’s assistance using the advantages offered by the Astana format.

🔹 We have to state with deep regret and concern that these positive changes have left the Palestinian issue on the sidelines.

🔹 The absolute imperative, however, is for all leading actors to reaffirm the lack of any alternatives to the two-state solution as one ensuring the right of Palestinians to their own independent state with the capital in East Jerusalem and the right of Israelis to safe and peaceful coexistence with their neighbours and the region as a whole.

🇺🇸🇪🇺 The US and the EU continue their destructive attempts to substitute genuine peace with some economic half measures and promote the Arab-Israeli normalisation bypassing the just solution to the Palestinian problem and the Arab Peace Initiative.

🇷🇺 Russia will continue to contribute to stabilisation in the Middle East and North Africa, and to promote the Middle East peace process together will the countries in the region and in coordination with other mediators acting in good faith.

🎙Director of the Foreign Ministry Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control Vladimir Yermakov’s interview with TASS News Agency (April 25, 2023):

Key points:

🔸Our goal in the geopolitical context is comprehensive and provides for building a fair multipolar world based on the principle of equal and indivisible security.

🔸In the current circumstances, it is impossible to hold any meaningful talks with the United States or the West as a whole. Poisoned with the venom of pseudo-exceptionalism, Washington is not ready for an equal dialogue.

🔸The United States is using every opportunity to maintain its increasingly shaky position of “global hegemon” and is therefore resolved to aggravate confrontation with Russia and other states which do not accept the patently objectionable ideas of Pax Americana.

🔸We have not abandoned the possibility of signing international treaties to regulate our relations with the West in the field of strategic stability in the future, after we attain the goals of the ongoing special military operation. I would like to repeat that this is only possible based on respect for Russia’s fundamental interests.

🔸We continue sending the West sobering signals on the need to prevent a disaster, but they remain deaf to our appeals. Moreover, they maliciously distort them for propaganda purposes.

🔸It would be a mistake to forget the sequence of events and who exactly began to escalate tensions in this area. Warsaw made official requests to deploy US nuclear weapons in Poland long before we had to take countermeasures to make up for the growing imbalances in the overall alignment of forces with NATO.

🔸US nuclear weapons are deployed at six military facilities in five countries on our continent, of which the US is not a part. In effect, Washington has for decades kept its nuclear weapons thousands of miles away from its national territory – on advanced bases where the NATO countries can quickly hit strategic targets in Russia and Belarus.

🎙 Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at the UN Security Council’s open debates “Effective multilateralism through the Defence of the Principles of the UN Charter” (New York, April 24, 2023)

Key points:

🔹 Today, our UN-centric system is going through a deep crisis. The main reason is a striving by some UN members to replace international law and the UN Charter with a certain “rules-based” order.

🔹 The collective West has set out to reshape the processes of multilateralism at the regional level to suit its needs.

🔹 The United States and its allies have deployed significant forces to undermine multilateralism in the Asia-Pacific region where an ASEAN-centered successful and open economic and security cooperation system has been taking shape for decades.

🔹 Since World War II, Washington has pulled off dozens of reckless criminal military operations without even trying to secure multilateral legitimacy.

🔹 Multilateral efforts were made to stop the war unleashed in the east of Ukraine as a result of a government coup. These efforts towards peaceful settlement were embodied in a UN Security Council resolution that unanimously approved the Minsk agreements. Kiev and its Western bosses trampled these agreements underfoot.

🔹 There should be no such thing as double standards. Both multilateralism and democracy should be respected within the member countries and in their relations with one another.

🔹 It is imperative to expedite Security Council reform by expanding the representation of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

🔹 It is our common duty to preserve the United Nations as the hard-won epitome of multilateralism and coordination of international politics. The key to success lies in working together and showing respect for the sovereign equality of states.

🔹 The Russian media were not allowed to come [to the US]. Please see to it that worldwide audiences can use your reports to glean every angle of the comments and assessments.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the results of his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

📍 New York, April 25, 2023

💬
The meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lasted over an hour. We considered the current issues on the UN agenda.

Antonio Guterres focused on the prospects for the further implementation of the Black Sea Initiative in the context of his own proposal, which was introduced and approved on July 22, 2022.

As he said himself, this is a package that includes assistance for exporting Ukrainian grain from Ukrainian ports and an identical commitment to the Russian Federation in that it concerns the removal of all obstacles to exporting Russian grain, primarily wheat, and fertilisers, created by the Western countries (primarily the United States, the EU, and the UK).

The Secretary-General described his efforts at promoting the Russian part of the deal as much as possible. So far, the progress has not been obvious. He expressed his considerations in a letter explaining the ideas on the further course of actions. This letter requires a thorough review.

Thus far, we do not see the Western countries’ desire to carry out what is necessary for the successful implementation of the Secretary-General’s initiative on the package approach to exporting agriculture products from Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

We will study his latest ideas now that we have them in black and white.

💬 British media outlet Sky News called Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov “the Jedi master of the dark arts of diplomacy.”

Apparently, this is a Freudian slip against the backdrop of the Western propagandists’ complete ignorance.

In Star Wars, the Jedi represent the Light side.

Here's a snippet on what the creators of Star Wars wrote about the Jedi:

they are Jedi Knights, guardians of peace and justice, the Jedi Order. They stand on the light side of the Force. They are protecting the Galactic Republic. They know how to use the Force, a supernatural power. Lightsabers are their weapons.

In principle, this is all true except that Lavrov... has not yet drawn his lightsaber.

🇷🇺🇺🇳On April 24, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York City on the sidelines of events held as part of Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council in April. The Minister thanked the Secretary-General for taking part in a key meeting of the UN Security Council under the Russian presidency on ‘Effective Multilateralism through the defence of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.’

Various aspects of Russia-UN cooperation, as well as key issues of the international agenda, were discussed in great detail.

☝The focus of the discussion was the situation in and around Ukraine. The Minister once again set forth a highly detailed assessment of the root causes of the current crisis, and the pace and goals of the special military operation that aims to eliminate threats to Russia’s national security. He 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐍 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 that can only prolong the current crisis.

He 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐍 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭, as stipulated by Article 100 of the UN Charter.

❗Sergey Lavrov also drew special attention to the failure of the United States to fulfil its obligations under the Agreement regarding the Headquarters of the United Nations. This included 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, due to attend various UN events, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐬. He once again emphasised that 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐨 𝐆𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, as prescribed under numerous UN General Assembly resolutions on the issue.

They exchanged detailed opinions on several topical issues reviewed by the UN Security Council, including the situation in Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian settlement. Sergey Lavrov and Antonio Guterres agreed that 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐔𝐍𝐒𝐂 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

🌾Substantial attention was devoted to issues of implementing the July 2022 Istanbul agreements for exporting Ukrainian foodstuffs and facilitating the unimpeded access of Russian agricultural and fertiliser exports to the global market.

❗Sergey Lavrov noted that, despite the fact that these agreements form an interlinked package, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐧𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐦 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐍 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.

Sergey Lavrov and Antonio Guterres noted the importance of strengthening the UN’s central coordinating role in global politics still further and promoting genuine multilateralism that relies on the fundamental norms of international law, including the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

🇧🇬Thousands-strong demonstrations under the slogan "Bulgaria - Zone of Peace" were held on Sunday in 32 Bulgarian cities.

The biggest action was held in the capital city Sofia. According to its organizers, it drew some 12,000 participants.

☝Participants insisted that Bulgaria remain in the zone of peace and refrain from taking part in armed conflicts. They demanded "peace, not war," stressing that weapons supplies to Ukraine would not help normalize the situation but, on the contrary, would entail more casualties. People insisted on Bulgaria’s sovereignty and the closure on NATO bases.

According to a TASS correspondent, thousands of people put their signatures under an initiative to hold a "referendum for peace and sovereignty" to prevent Bulgaria’s participation in armed conflicts. The signature collecting campaign was organized by activists who are not affiliated with any political associations. They plan to raise around 600,000 signatures by July 10.

Another "Bulgaria - Zone of Peace" action is scheduled for May 21.

⚡️Commentary by Russian Ambassador to Germany S. Nechaev on the open letter of German journalists

Dear ladies and gentlemen, I have carefully read the open letter addressed to me by some German journalists and heads of a number of German media outlets with a call to “immediately and unconditionally” release Evan Gershkovich, a correspondent for the American newspaper ‘The Wall Street Journal’ detained in Yekaterinburg. I did not see any arguments supporting the allegations that the accusations against him are "unsubstantiated" and are "an act of political arbitrariness against the freedom of the press."

As has been repeatedly explained, E. Gershkovich was caught red-handed while trying to obtain secret information. There are reasons to believe that he used his journalistic status as a cover for committing illegal actions, qualifying as espionage. Investigation, fact-finding and verdict — all that is the prerogative of law enforcement and judicial authorities. Or does it happen differently here?

☝Freedom of the press is a universal and indivisible concept. 𝐈𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 ❞𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞❞ 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬, 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭, 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫. This begs the conclusion about double standards.

❗Therefore, the question arises: why did not you undertake such demarches when Russian journalists 𝐃. 𝐃𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌. 𝐅𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧 were killed as a result of terrorist acts on the orders of Kiev? Where are the angry appeals in defense of 𝐉. 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞, who dared to tell the world the truth about the crimes of the American authorities? We did not hear words of solidarity when sanctions were imposed against ‘𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲’ 𝐚𝐧𝐝 ‘𝐒𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐧𝐢𝐤’, broadcasting a point of view alternative to Western narratives. We do not remember the examples of support for journalists persecuted for political reasons in the Baltic countries, including 𝐌. 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐦, 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫-𝐢𝐧-𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐨𝐟 '𝐒𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐧𝐢𝐤 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚', who is currently in custody. We did not hear any outraged voices in connection with the attempted 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐, when an explosive device was planted near the house where they lived. Why? Doesn’t that mean anything to you? Or 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 - 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 - 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨?

For our part, we support the aspiration to establish the truth in the case of E. Gershkovich. His fate will be decided by the court. Attempts to put pressure on law enforcement and judicial authorities are futile.

🌐 Today is International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

On December 12, 2018, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution A/RES/73/127 on marking this day. The document notes that the International Day aims to promote UN values and to reaffirm the trust of the world’s nations in the goals and principles of the UN Charter.

🇷🇺🇺🇳 Russia is invariably committed to the policy of upholding multilateralism and the UN’s leading role in global affairs and is actively involved in efforts to overhaul the UN and to adapt it to new international realities.

This is particularly topical today when a narrow group of states advancing the rules-based order concept exerts unprecedented pressure on the UN and other multilateral institutions.

✍️ Under the Russian Foreign Policy Concept, approved on March 31, 2023, Russia intends to prioritise efforts to reinstate the UN’s role as a central coordination mechanism in coordinating the interests of UN member states.

At the same time, one of the main aims of national foreign policy is to strengthen the potential of multilateral regional associations and integration organisations involving Russia. For example, this refers to measures to enhance the international role of #BRICS, the #SCO, the #CIS, the #EAEU, the #CSTO, #RIC and other interstate associations and international organisations, as well as mechanisms with significant Russian involvement.

⏰ Today, on April 24, FM Sergey Lavrov will take part in one of the key events of Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council, specifically, the open debate on "Effective multilateralism through the defence of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations." The debate will be streamed live on all our feeds.

🇺🇳 Foreign Minister Sergey #Lavrov chairs Security Council debate on effective multilateralism through defence of principles of #UN Charter

📍 New York, April 24

#UNCharterIsOurRules

🇷🇺🇺🇳 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey #Lavrov has arrived in New York.

🌐 On April 24, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in one of the key events of our country’s presidency at the UN Security Council, an open debate on the agenda item "Effective #multilateralism through the defence of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations."

An expanding range of contemporary challenges and threats and their increasingly complex nature makes it all the more important to enhance true multilateralism based on equitable cooperation and taking indiscriminate account of the interests of all states. We believe that such interaction must rest on the generally recognised principles of international law including the goals and principles of the UN Charter. The fundamental rules of inter-state relations, approved at the San Francisco conference nearly eight decades ago, remain fully valid.

The main goal of the meeting is to offer member states an opportunity to reaffirm their unconditional commitment to the core provisions of the UN Charter, primarily those with regard to strong adherence to the sovereign equality of states and refraining from interference in their domestic affairs.

🇵🇸 On April 25, Sergey Lavrov will chair another UNSC high-level event, an open debate under the agenda item “The situation in the #MiddleEast, including the Palestinian question.” This event is regularly held within the reporting and mandate cycle of the Security Council, however, it acquires special significance and urgency in view of the current extremely tense situation in the Middle East.

We consider it necessary to bring the focus of the international community, including UNSC member states and the regional actors concerned, to the dangerous developments “on the ground,” most notably in the Arab-Israeli conflict area which, regrettably, has been unfairly relegated to the background due to the Ukraine crisis. The Palestine problem which is central to the Middle East settlement process, is further from a solution than ever. It adds more urgency to the overall task of restoring the peace horizon and reaffirming the commonly acknowledged international-law basis for the settlement, including the two-state formula.

🇷🇺🇺🇳 Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York (April 23, 2023)

💬 The United States violated again its obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement, having denied issuance of US visas to Russian journalists who were supposed to accompany Minister Lavrov on his official visit to New York to take part in the flagship events of the Russian Presidency of the UN Security Council.

This was done despite the fact that Russian media representatives complied with all relevant terms and requirements, including a valid UN accreditation.

❗️ We consider this step as another manifestation of neglect of the international law by the United States. When denying access to UN events for Russian journalists, the US authorities once again demonstrate their true attitude to freedom of speech and availability of information.

We count on the UN leadership and specialized international mechanisms to pay due attention to this egregious situation and take all necessary steps against the violator.
