Dear Students,

As you may know, before the start of the semester we were notified about the transition from Google Workspace to Microsoft services.

After a series of meetings, technical analyses, and many hours of background work, I am thrilled to deliver the news that the transition has been stopped.

CIO has made a formal recommendation to suspend the transition efforts based on the joint feedback provided by the Student Government and Faculty Senate.

We are awaiting an official announcement from the IT people with more details to follow.

Special thanks to the team of SG Ministry of Education, Faculty Senate, to myself and other parties involved. I appreciate your hard work.

Updates from the Academic Council meeting as of 16/08/2023

- Memorandum of Cooperation between NU and Institute of Coal Chemistry and Technology was approved

- Memorandum of Understanding between NU and Sidra Medicine was approved

- Memorandum of Cooperation between NU and National Research Center For Health Development was approved

- Student exchange agreement between NU and Koç University was approved (this allows for an exchange of 2 students in general)

- Memorandum of Understanding between NU and Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) was approved

- Periodic Review Policy was approved (the policy concerns periodic review of Institutional academic systems in line with accreditation requirements)

Memorandum of Understanding was approved between NU and Koç University (Top School in Turkey). This will give rise to student and faculty exchange.

Master's & PhD add/drop deadlines will become same as the Undergraduate deadlines:

Drop Deadline for Master's & PhD students is to be Wednesday of Week 2 of the classes (previously, it was Friday of Week 2).

Add Deadline for Master's and PhD students is to be Friday of Week 2 of classes (previously, it was Wed of Week 2).

NU's GSB received membership in BGA (Business Graduate Association), which is an assisted organization of AMBA (Association of MBAs). GSB is now 250th member in the BGA network.

Thus, GSB is currently in Stage 2 of 3-stage process of AMBA accreditation. AMBA is one of the triple crown accreditation organizations for business schools (only 300 schools earned AMBA accreditation).

Out of 2000 international applicants, 161 received the offer. 106 international applicants accepted the offer to study on Abay scholarship, while 28 applicants will study on paid basis.

Updates from the Academic Space Allocation Committee

-New water dispenser is to be installed before Fall2023 between Block 4 and 6

-Classrooms 2.105, 7.105, 9.105 will be renovated and levelled starting from this summer. 2.105 will become a flex-classroom.

-Non-SMG offices in Block 6, floors 1-3 were relocated so SMG offices are in one place.

-8.522 (now offices) will be renovated into a classroom for 50-60 students this summer.

-8.422 & 8.322 will become lecture rooms instead of computer labs.

-In C3, rooms 1010, 3015, 3016, and 3030 are now "Professional Education Classrooms".

-1st floor of block 7e is to be changed significantly. For example, 7e.125/1 is to be divided into 2 classrooms, while 125/3 & 125/4 will become a computer lab.

-Additional sockets/lighting were/will be placed in one side of balconies.

There is a proposal under discussion for NU to have a new grant type, which is an internal grant.

Support for Students with Disability and Special Needs Policy and Procedures were approved at the Academic Council.

This would allow disabled students to approach vice-deans and ask for accomodation. Also, this policy will help NU's accreditation.

NU signed a contract for internship and employment opportunities with two French companies: Alstom and Air Liquide

Memorandum of Understanding was signed between NU and Universiti Malaya (Malaysia), which can give rise to student exchange and joint research.

Agreement on student exchange was approved between NU and Tsinghua University (China)

It is recommended to work from home for all members of the Nazarbayev University community for today, due to the unexpectedly high levels of snow.

We ask all professors to move to online classes, seminars and meetings today, if at all possible.

Dear NU Community,

It is with deep sadness that we must inform you of the unexpected passing of Dr. Christian Schoenbach, our esteemed professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at the School of Sciences and Humanities.

Dr. Schoenbach joined NU as a faculty of our former School of Sciences and Technologies in 2013 and then, after serving for a year as Professor at the International Research Center for Medical Sciences, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kumamoto University, Japan, rejoined NU and Chaired the Department of Biology at the SSH.

Dr. Schoenbach was an exceptional scholar and educator whose dedication and passion for teaching and research were unwavering. His contributions to the University, his department, and the wider academic community were significant and will be deeply missed.

We plan for a memorial service on Campus in the near future.

We express our sincere condolences and sympathy for this irreparable loss to his family, relatives, friends, and the entire community of NU, especially to the faculty, staff and students of SSH.

Campus Security Services will introduce a parking fee, which will be effective starting from June 1. This fee will be introduced due to an increased number of cars on campus.

SEDS signs the Memorandum of Understanding between Nazarbayev University and University of Lorraine (France), which was initiated by the Kazakhstan and French Governments.

Admission department announced that this year the number of international applicants doubled. While in last year was 830, this year it was 1830.
