The War Teaches Us Nothing

War teaches us nothing. War always goes against the logic of life. It sends us to the very bottom of existence: food, sleep, purity, short-lived love, clearly rhyming with death. War takes home and a sense of security on an ontological level. Convenience and measuredness, a learned positive attitude is impossible. Optimism is apophatic.

Talking about war is not easy, it is easier to run away from it, but, it turns out, it is also not so easy. In the era of global processes, things are interdependent, there is a hint of suspense in the measured tranquility of European life.

The poem by Demyan Kudryavtsev is an example of complex speaking about the war, which is expressed in the disintegration of linguistic means into separate elements.
The poem responds with the scale “la – si – do” to the question from Theodor Adorno’s notes “Is poetry possible after Auschwitz”. This answer pushes back the post-war state of “post” and changes the temporary structure “after Auschwitz” to a much more terrible and disturbing one: Auschwitz is ahead.

First, it is worth emphasizing once again the fundamental importance of the individual choice of courses by students for the liberal arts model from the very beginning of education. That is why the rejection of this option means the rejection of the model itself. Smolny is a completely unique project in Russia, where this freedom was, although not completely, realized. If you carefully study our old curricula, then on paper this freedom reached somewhere up to 70% of the courses, in reality it never exceeded 50% – 40%, given the limitations associated with scheduling conflicts. Pressure on the program from various university officials in order to reduce the degree of this freedom was almost always there, although there were people who sincerely helped us. In recent years, the situation has been constantly deteriorating, and a few years ago, the concept of a multidisciplinary bachelor’s degree, which was fundamental for Smolny, disappeared from ministerial documents. However, everything is known in comparison, and in other programs of Liberal Arts, such as RANEPA, Tyumen University, there has always been less choice (attempts to introduce the model in NArFU and SFU were, apparently, less large-scale and systematic), there has always been less choice.

One can object to me that today there are new disciplinary programs, such as, for example, the programs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of St. Petersburg State University, where the choice within the curriculum reaches 30% – 40%. Yes, this is true, but it happens within a narrowly disciplinary field. From this point of view, electivity in the liberal arts is much more radical and covers a very wide range of areas – from the arts, including the practical arts, to the natural sciences. At the limit, there are examples such as Brown University with its open curriculum, when there is no general formal curriculum at all, and the program is formed for a specific student. We could only dream of something like this.

The second remark, in connection with the admission to the new program next year. Freedom of choice is determined not only by the structure of the curriculum in a particular semester and the proportion of elective disciplines, but also by the volume of supply of these disciplines for the entire contingent of students. That is, next year this total volume of supply will decrease by at least a quarter, and if we take into account all the same scheduling conflicts that the creators of the new curriculum, I have no doubt, did not think about, even more then a quarter. Therefore, we can say that the program, as it exists, is working for the last year. In addition, the destruction of the program naturally calls into question the name of the faculty – they are clearly trying to get rid of it as a symbolic brand.

Two Comments on Longread about Smolny

On October 24, “Novaya Gazeta. Europe” published a longread about Smolny by Daria Kozlova. This text seems relevant to me. It shows how actively Smolny is fighting for its preservation. I admire the determination and courage of my fellow faculty members, and, of course, the loyalty of Smolny students to the ideas of liberal arts. I decided to write a small quasi-bureaucratic commentary on the article as a friendly reaction to it.

Great words by Denis and the amazing students of Smolny!

War Through the Eyes of an Economist

What do economists know about the unfolding and effects of military conflicts? How do wars affect economic growth, macroeconomic and sectoral imbalances, and the financial system? What channels of an inter-country military conflict impact the global economy? Are there limits to the use of economic sanctions as a response of the international community to military aggression in the 21st century? What is the optimal economic policy for post-war reconstruction, and what could a possible “Marshall Plan” for Ukraine be?
Everyone searching for answers to these questions is invited to join the “War Shocks and Economic Development” course by Vsevolod Ostapenko within the Smolny Beyond Borders project. The enrollment for this course presupposes some minimal prior training in economics. However, one does not need a broad background in many economic disciplines to complete it successfully. Knowledge of basic terms and an elementary understanding of economic mechanisms are sufficient.
Classes will take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays from November 9 to 23, and enrollment will run until November 7. We are looking forward to welcoming those who are interested!

There has come another round of persecution of teachers at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For participating in an anti-war rally, our colleague Denis Skopin was fired with the wording "for an immoral act." We express our solidarity with Denis, whose anti-war position, on the contrary, is the only moral and civic responsibility. It is characteristic that St Petersburg University, led by a "lawyer", so clearly demonstrates the final loss of university autonomy and completely submits to the dictatorship, inventing such legal novels.

The End of Putin's Myth
Tuesday, October 25, 2022

5:30 pm – 7:00 pm EDT/GMT-4

Dmitri Bykov is a preeminent Russian author of prose fiction, poetry, biography, and essays, who is currently residing in exile in the United States as a vocal critic of Putin’s regime. His hugely popular “Citizen Poet” project, launched in 2011, provided poetic commentary on contemporary political and cultural events, as Bykov’s numerous articles, broadcasts, interviews, and blogs still do, aiming “to help Russia to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.”

In this lecture Bykov explores the roots and sources of Putin’s mythology, explains his success in capturing public opinion in Russia and predicts the decline of his political era. Bykov examines in detail the origin of Putin’s image and the meaning of secret service in Russian collective subconsciousness. Woland of Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita (1967); Ostap Bender of Ilf and Petrov’s Twelve Chairs (1928) and The Little Golden Calf (1931); and Colonel Stierlitz, the hero of the 1973 Soviet TV series about a Soviet spy operating in Nazi Germany, are the true heroes of Bykov’s analysis, while “the small bureaucrat Putin” is relegated to its margins.

Reem-Kayden Center Laszlo Z. Bito ’60 Auditorium

5:30 pm – 7:00 pm EDT/GMT-4

The roundtable "Russian Higher Education in the Context of War in Ukraine" will start in 15 minutes; here is the Youtube stream.

The recent issue of Ethics & International Affairs, a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, featured an essay written by Jonathan Berker, executive vice president, vice president for academic affairs, and professor of political studies at Bard College and vice chancellor of the Open Society University Network. In the essay, Jonathan Beker analyzes the liberal arts and sciences as an international reform movement, which is now under siege. Smolny's case is also being considered.

Russian Higher Education in the Context of War in Ukraine
Friday, October 21, 2022
Online: Webinar Registration Link
11:00 am – 12:00 pm EDT/GMT-4

Speakers: Victor Apryshchenko, Jonathan Becker, Philip Fedchin, Natalia Fedorova, Ilya Kalinin, Archi Magno, Vsevolod Ostapenko, Andrei Rodin.
The round table is dedicated to the presentation of the first courses and public lectures of the Smolny Beyond Borders project. As is clear from the titles of the courses, they are all related to the theme of the war and the circumstances that gave rise to it. The discussion will touch upon the goals of the online project, its audience and prospects. The process of strengthening control over Russian universities did not start right away, but reached a new level with the intensification of Russian aggression in Ukraine. This included an assault on liberal arts programs in Russia including SPBSU’’s dismantling of Smolny/Faculty of Liberal arts and Sciences. What can and should those who left do, and what choice do those who stay have? How can the experience accumulated over the years of Russian-American cooperation be preserved in the new situation? The round table will be held in English.
