Værløse FibulaArtifact found in a grave in Denmark, dated to roughly 200-600 AD.
The runic inscription, in Elder Futhark, transliterates to “
Alugod” or “
Alu God” (ᚨᛚᚢᚷᛟᛞ), and ends with a great example of a Germanic Migration Era swastika.
The meaning of Alugod is debated. Generally “
god” is taken to mean “
good” (from Proto-Germanic *gōdaz), although it is also very possible it means “
god” (from Proto-Germanic *gudą). “
Alu”, on the other hand, is thought to simply mean “
ale”. However, given that ᚨᛚᚢ is by far the most common word found in Elder Futhark inscriptions, and it is often found on seemingly religious artifacts and associated with depictions of deities, suggests this word had a much deeper esoteric religious meaning.
