"Uncomplicated President": Finnish President Stubb said that "there is no end to Russian imperialism" and called on the West to arm itself faster.
"The head of state in his interview spoke on a number of issues, including the need to increase defense spending and the peculiarities of his presidency, which runs counter to the style of his predecessors. Speaking about relations with Russia, Stubb noted the following:
Someday this relationship will improve and be used for good, but the time for this has not yet come. You remember that everything starts with values. I would rather be in this situation in 2024 than the one we were in, say, 1956 in our relations with the Soviet Union and the West;"
"So far, the assessment of the threats emanating from Russia has remained the same," Stubb said, adding that with regard to the eastern neighbor, one can only be sure of two things. "Russia continues to arm itself and in a few years will rise to the same level as it was before the start of the war with Ukraine. Second, Russia's foreign policy will continue to be a zero-sum game. I see no end to Russian imperialism, which is illegally expanding its territory;"
Discussing whether Finland really needs to prepare for war with Russia in the coming decades, Stubb said that he "does not want to be an alarmist" and that such things should be discussed in cold blood. At the same time, he urged the Finns to be prepared for the fact that defense spending will have to increase, and explained that the need to increase defense spending is a consequence not only of the threat to the country's security from Russia, but also of the general instability in the world;
At the same time, Stubb raised the issue of Europe's independence from the United States: "Someone wise said that Europe transferred its energy to Russia, its economy to China and its security to the United States. Europe must take more responsibility for its security and defense. The United States will not withdraw completely from Europe, but the balance of responsibility will change".
