2014E.C. (2021G.C) Meskel festival was colorfully celebrated by Wolkite University students.
Students gather in celebration of the Meskel Festival at Wolkite University, Sept. 27, 2021. The University Higher officials, the elders of the Gurage people, and students on Monday marked the day Meskel, the finding of the True Cross, celebrations with various cultural activities.
It is known that Meskel is one of the most celebrated religious festivals in the country. The ceremony began with a blessing ceremony by the elders of the Gurage people. Dr. Faris Dalil, the president of the university, in his speech to the students, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the students for being able to celebrate the festival together.
He recalled that in connection with last year's Covid-19 epidemic and law enforcement actions at the national level, students were unusually late for schooling. Due to this reason, students are being forced to celebrate the Ethiopian New Year and Meskele festivity here at Wolkite University. By considering this fact the University has been given more emphasis for the ceremony. Furthermore, efforts have been made to make students feel the Meskel celebration just like celebrating at their home.
The president added that the cross is a symbol of temptation from a religious point of view. Students are also challenged in a variety of situations during their studies. For example, the president said that our students will be tempted like any other part of society because of the various issues they face in their personal lives, the confusion, the ambiguities, and the conspirators who want to impose their own political views. It is known that especially this year, the invading Junta forces (TPLF) and the people who oppose the prosperity of Ethiopia were spreading misinformation in the media and confuse students as well. But, he also explained that the students will overcome this challenge by persevering, confidently, and diligently for the purpose for which they came.
The president also stressed that if students are weak and easily frustrated with various challenges, they will be vulnerable to various problems and makes them forget the purpose for which they came. Therefore, when students are encountering such kinds of problems, they should be able to overcome the challenges wisely. There will be no obstacles in the way of those who have always endured the trials and tribulations of their lives.
The President also stressed that students should be able to learn in all the challenges they face and also gain experience in their lives. Prominent South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela once said, “I have never been defeated in my life; either I win or I learn”, he said. Therefore, the President stressed that our students are expected to break free from the mentality of defeat. Instead of defeat, students need to be determined to move forward with the bright future
The President said that today's students are the ones who will lift the yoke of poverty that has been imposed on our country for centuries and will lead it to its destination with knowledge. The classrooms of students today are the future leaders of the country tomorrow. The president also said students need to move forward with determination and dream of a brighter future beyond the hardships they face.
Finally, the President expressed his strong desire for the Meskele festivity to be a peaceful, loving, caring, and supportive holiday.
According to the students who attended the event they said that the university paid special attention to the event and made the necessary preparations. Students expressed their happiness that the university paid special attention to the celebration. The students also conveyed their congratulatory message to the people of Ethiopia, thanking all those who organized such a Meskel celebration.
