Possibly Unpopular Opinion: There is a prevalent attitude amongst politicians of every type that if the truth about our elections becomes known, it will bring the whole corrupt temple down. And that means even if they are pure as the driven slush (the best any politician can aspire to), there is a good chance they will lose their current position, all their current power. They can't let that happen. They don't have the inner confidence, fortitude or faith to trust that if the deck gets reshuffled they can regain their positions of power. The best justify it as "but then I won't be able to help people anymore". This is, of course, balderdash. But when we did have free elections we voted wrong so many times that we lost that basic right, the right to vote yourself out of trouble or mistakes.
