Google, Meta Urge Australia To Delay Bill On Social Media Ban For Children, Call The Bill “An Inconsistent”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s centre-left government wants to pass the bill, which represents some of the toughest controls on children’s social media use imposed by any country, into law by the end of the parliamentary year on Thursday.

The bill was introduced in parliament last week and opened for submissions of opinions for only one day.

Google and Meta said in their submissions that the government should wait for the results of an age-verification trial before going ahead.

The age-verification system may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off.

“In the absence of such results, neither industry nor Australians will understand the nature or scale of age assurance required by the bill, nor the impact of such measures on Australians,” Meta said.

“In its present form, the bill is inconsistent and ineffective.”

The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or children, to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place. Companies could be fined up to A$49.5 million ($32 million) for systemic breaches.

Bytedance’s TikTok said the bill lacked clarity and that it had “significant concerns” with the government’s plan to pass the bill without detailed consultation with experts, social media platforms, mental health organisations and young people.

Elon Musk’s X also raised concerns about the bill.

The opposition Liberal party is expected to support the bill.

KEITH PITT MP

...is preparing to cross the floor for the first time to vote against the Australian Under 16 Social Media Ban.

He stood strong despite being grilled on SkyNewsAust as he outlined the concerns of rushing through a piece of legislation that may not work.

"My job as a backbencher is to make sure that what we’re doing is right. It’s not to simply trundle along and agree with everything that’s out before me . .

I talked to my wife about these things and she doesn’t like it she thinks it’s silly idea . . . Because the kids will get around it and they use it so much for so many things."

🔥PRESSURE THE LIBERALS TO WITHDRAW SUPPORT FOR THE SOCIAL MEDIA AGE VERIFICATION BILL!

If the bill's ban-list includes YouTube but not Pornhub, you can be guaranteed that this is not really about protecting minors from explicit content. Its about monitoring all citizens and what they do and say online.

This will be a back-door to enforce digital ID and end online privacy.

The Free Speech Union provides a tool for generating emails:

Personalised and signed letters work best.

Some key points you could use:

The bill risks exposing Australians’ personal data, such as IDs and biometric information, to breaches and misuse.

Age verification systems could de-anonymise users and create a chilling effect on free speech.

Unelected bureaucrats like the eSafety Commissioner would gain sweeping powers with minimal oversight.

The legislation fails to protect Australians effectively while creating significant risks to privacy.

The Onus Should be on Parents

Consider pointing out that a minimum age for social media could be legislated with the onus being on parents to supervise their children - in the same way parents are required to ensure their children are receiving schooling, ie: with the same sorts of penalties for derelict parents.

It should be the responsibility of parents to properly supervise their children's access to devices, including by using parental controls on any devices considered necessary.

The Australian Government gave the Australian citizens 24 hours to place a submission to The Online Safety Minimum Age Bill 2024 of Friday the 22nd of November 2024.

A measly 4 hours was given to the senate enquiry today, Monday the 25th.

This is the full telecast of the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee hearing.

The Social Media Minimum Age bill has never been about protecting kids. It has always been about implementing Digital ID for all Australians.

🚨MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA MINIMUM AGE’ BILL UPDATES:

Zoe Daniel will introduce amendments to the 'Social Media Minimum Age' legislation today.

Her amendments include:

🔴 Laws around transparency of risk mitigation

🔴 Penalties of up to 10% of global revenue

🔴 Civil penalties of the onshore executives (hey Elon Musk)

🔴 User control over the algorithm (Never gonna happen lol)

🔴 Default privacy settings upon account set up

The bill returns to the House today for its second reading, amendment considerations, and a likely passing vote by Labor.

The impromptu Senate inquiry report is due today, to be tabled after 2pm.

There has been speculation on whether the Liberals will still support the bill, following their recent party room meeting.

Reports confirm some party room defections, but Peter Dutton should retain majority support needed to pass this legislation.

Finally—the Senate is scheduled to vote on the bill tomorrow, 27 November 2024.
