Let me tell you a story that’s been passed down in the U.S. for nearly 80 years. Back then, it wasn’t unusual for individuals to own and run their own private banks—none of this big corporate banking we see today. Just one man, his money, and his customers.

Now, there was this one banker, well-off and respected in his community. One day, a customer walked in and requested a large withdrawal. The banker had the money, no doubt, but he hesitated. He feared that paying out such a big amount all at once could shake the stability of his bank. So, he asked the customer to hold off for a few weeks.

But people talk. The customer got nervous, started suspecting the bank was in trouble, and before you know it, he tipped off the press. He restructured his debts, reassured his creditors, and soon, the media caught wind that the bank was regaining stability. Shares shot back up, customers returned, and within months, he tripled his wealth. Yet through it all, the check remained untouched in his safe.

A year later, he returned to the park, eager to thank Rockefeller. As soon as he spotted him, he rushed forward, holding the check. “Sir, you saved my life! I never even used the money, but just knowing it was there gave me the strength to turn everything around.”

Before he could say another word, a nurse approached with a smile. “Oh, there you are! It’s time to head back to the hospital.” Then, turning to the banker, she said, “Did he tell you he’s John Rockefeller? He does that all the time. He’s one of our patients.”

The banker was frozen. The check—worthless. The man—not Rockefeller.

But as he walked back to his office, something clicked. It wasn’t the check that saved him; it was his belief in himself. As long as he had let fear control him, he couldn’t see a way out. But the moment he believed he had the resources, the solutions started coming.

Therefore, run your own race at your own pace in your own space to get to the right place without ending in disgrace. What works for one person may kill you. Focus on the gifts God bestowed on you, and don’t be envious of the blessings He gave others.

Failure is temporary.
