Paris is a whole and whole universe unto itself, hollowed out and shaped by history; so he appears in this time of Napoleon III with its towering buildings, great cathedrals, majestic boulevards, and winding medieval streets - as vast and indestructible as nature itself. The Seine with its bridges and bookstores, the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Tuileries Gardens, the Place de la Concorde, the start of the Champs Elysees—almost everything except the Luxembourg Gardens and the Palais Royal.
All embraced by it, by its turbulent and mesmerized inhabitants who throng the galleries, theatres, cafes, spawning again and again genius and holiness, philosophy and war, frivolity and the finest arts; So it seems that if the whole world outside is drowned in darkness, what is good, what is beautiful, what is important may still come to its best flowers. Even the majestic trees that adorn and protect its streets are in harmony with it - and the waters of the Seine, full and beautiful as it penetrates its heart; so that the earth in that place, formed by blood and consciousness, ceased to be earth and became Paris.
