A few dear souls have exhorted me to not criticise Scott Morrison, but to simply pray for him instead.
Let's walk & chew gum at the same time.
It reminds me of the scene from Fiddler on the Roof where a character says, "Rabbi, Rabbi, is there a blessing for the Czar?" To which the Rabbi says, "Yes, my son. God bless and keep the Czar… far away from us!"
No doubt Jesus knew Holy Spirit would inspire St Paul to instruct Timothy to pray for "all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence." (1Timothy 2:2)
Even so, He publicly eviscerated the oppressive burdens, regulations & character of Ancient Israel's ruling social elites, the Pharisees. No doubt He also prayed for them.
But people who advocate only prayer & no action both fail to steward the democracy we've been given & fail to heed the parable of the Good Samaritan. Loving our neighbour requires we speak & act for their welfare, justice, freedom & peace.
Scott Morrison is the nation's leader, & we pray for him:
• that he repents of his arrogance & dictatorialism
• that he receives wisdom on how to govern with true justice & mercy
• that he understands completely how devastating a burden to people's physical, mental & spiritual lives government policies are, &
• that the corruption behind the pandemic response be revealed for all to see & be brought to justice.
We can pray the same for each state leader & chief health officer too.
God bless and keep the Czar… far away from us!
