ICC to probe sexual misconduct claims against chief war crimes prosecutor
THE HAGUE, Netherlands - The International Criminal Court’s (ICC’s) governing body has confirmed it is seeking an “external probe” into allegations of sexual misconduct by the court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan.
Khan, who had previously denied the allegations, said on Monday he would press ahead with his duties while the investigation is ongoing. Khan has been at the helm of the court’s prosecutions since 2021, including war crimes probes involving Russia and Ukraine as well as Palestine and Israel.
It is understood a woman who claims to have been subjected to unwanted sexual advances by Mr Khan had raised concerns about the competence of the Independent Oversight Mechanism (IOM), the ICC's watchdog. Mr Khan is alleged to have responded to a formal sexual misconduct complaint against him by trying to persuade the alleged victim that she should deny the claims, despite having been advised to avoid one-to-one contact.
Criticised initially for not acting fast enough to prevent atrocities in Gaza, Khan touched off a firestorm when applying for arrest warrants over the war. Netanyahu called it a “moral outrage of historic proportions” while United States President Joe Biden said it was “outrageous”. Khan also sought and obtained an ICC warrant for President Vladimir Putin of Russia, which promptly slapped arrest warrants on the prosecutor himself.
Khan's brother, Imran Ahmad Khan, former British MP and convicted sex offender was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in 2008. Former Tory MP sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually assaulting 15-year-old boy
Imran Ahmad Khan forced the boy to drink gin and tonic at a party in 2008 before dragging him upstairs, pushing him on to a bed and then asking him to watch pornography before the attack.
