▫️Quebec suspends international adoptions amid human trafficking concerns
The Quebec government has suspended the opening of new files for international adoptions, saying it is concerned about the risk of human trafficking.
The province's health and social services ministry says it wants to do a thorough assessment of the adoption process before proceeding with any additional files.
This is in spite of the Hague Convention, a series of international treaties that aim to protect children and families from illegal adoptions and child abduction.

▫️Stratford man gets seven years in prison for human trafficking of teen girl
A 37-year-old Stratford man is headed to prison after being sentenced in Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Friday to seven years behind bars for his role in the human trafficking of a 15-year-old girl.
Jason Cook was convicted back in April by a jury on three offences: human trafficking a person younger than 18 years old, receiving a material benefit from human trafficking, and procuring or attempting to procure a person to become a prostitute. He was acquitted on a charge of living on the avails of prostitution.
Cook got concurrent three-and-four year sentences for the latter convictions.

▫️Sentencing set for Sudbury man who got girl hooked on drugs and into sex work
A Sudbury man who choked a teen he forced into sex work will be sentenced on Jan. 29.
Paul Castonguay, 46, who is in custody, was convicted earlier this year of eight charges involving the underage female teen.
“Hopefully, we’ll have the Gladue report received and reviewed,” defence lawyer Denis Michel, appearing via Zoom link, told the court during a recent appearance.
Castonguay was to have his sentencing hearing on Oct. 1, but a Gladue report – which assists a judge with sentencing options for people of First Nation heritage – was not ready.
