Founded in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. With the growth that followed, at the end of the century Las Vegas became the most populous city in America founded in the 20th century (previously Chicago in the 19th century). The city's tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the nickname The City of Sin, and this nickname made Las Vegas a popular place for filming and television programming. On the other hand, Las Vegas also has the highest number of churches per capita than any other city in the US. Outdoor lighting displays are ubiquitous on the Las Vegas Strip and in a number of places throughout the city. Viewed from space, the Las Vegas metropolitan area is the brightest city on Earth.
