When Israeli students finish high school, most must serve two or three years in the country's defence forces.

The IDF is one of the only militaries in the world that has mandatory conscription of women. In the first few years of its existence, women served mainly in "traditional" support roles. In 1995 the groundbreaking ruling by the High Court of Justice in the Alice Miller case was issued, which ordered flight courses to be opened to women, and for the first time recognized women's right to equal opportunity in the IDF as a human right, rejecting budgetary and technical arguments.
