Stoicism
It is a system of ethics examining how to lead a virtuous life and find joy in the face of adversity. The core of Stoic thinking is based on logic and reason as a means of understanding oneself and one’s surroundings. Its focus is on moral autonomy and responsibility – Stoics believe individuals have control over their own destiny, provided they think logically, live virtuously, and exercise their free will. As such, Stoics strive to remain indifferent to external matters in order to focus more fully on cultivating their character, which can be done by remaining true to virtuous ideals like temperance, courage, wisdom, justice, and moderation.
At its heart Stoicism teaches self-discipline: stability in life comes when we learn not to respond emotionally or hastily to events outside our control—like loss or pain—and instead focus on what is within our power—our thoughts and actions toward others. Instead of seeing misfortune as something outside ourselves we must tackle them head-on, Stoics emphasize changing our attitudes towards it; accepting it valiantly as part of the human condition rather than fighting it futilely with regret or envy.
The philosophy also places importance on mindfulness; thoughtfully considering the implications and subtleties of decisions before making them rather than allowing passions or immediate desires be a knee-jerk guide. Ultimately Stoicism demands thoughtful consideration and strategic action in order for one to avoid being overwhelmed by emotions while achieving peace amidst chaotic environments and confidently embracing any exigencies life may present.
