GLADIATOR : I
ㅤㅤㅤIn 180 AD, the Hispano-Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) intends to return to his hometown after he leads the Roman army to victory against the Germanic tribes near Vindobona in Limes Germanicus. Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that his own son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), is unfit to rule and that he wants Maximus to succeed him as regent to help save Rome from corruption. Commodus killed his father when he was informed of the plan.
ㅤㅤㅤCommodus announces that he is the new Emperor and asks Maximus to submit to Commodus, but Maximus refuses. Maximus is captured by the guards and told that he and his family will die. Maximus kills his captors and returns to his hometown near Trujillo where he finds his family murdered. Maximus buried his wife and son, then he fainted. He is found by a slave trader (Omid Djalili) who takes him to the Roman province of Zucchabar, where he is sold to a gladiator trainer named Antonius Proximo (Oliver Reed).
ㅤㅤㅤDespite his initial objections, Maximus fights in a local tournament and befriends two other gladiators, Juba (Djimon Hounsou), a Numidia, and Hagen (Ralf Moeller), a Germanic. His military skills helped him win battles and gain recognition from other gladiators and many people. Antonius informs him that he was once a gladiator and advises Maximus that he must "get the attention of the people" to win his freedom. Antonius brought his gladiators to fight in the Colosseum because Commodus had arranged the fight for 150 days.
ㅤㅤㅤDisguised by a helmet, Maximus first fought as a gladiator in the Colosseum as a Carthaginian in the scene of the Battle of Zama. Unexpectedly, Maximus leads his team to victory and Commodus enters the Colosseum to congratulate him. He ordered Maximus, still disguised, as the leader of the gladiators to show himself and give his name. Maximus then reveals himself and declares vengeance. Commodus was forced by many to keep the gladiators alive and the Praetorian Guard appeared to withstand the gladiators' attacks.
