《 Praying tarawih at home and not in congregation 》
▪️ Shaykh Ubayd Al-Jabiree.
❪❓❫ The Question :
Is it preferable for sisters and brothers to pray Tarawih at home or with a congregation in a mosque?
❪ ✅ ❫ The Answer :
According to the clear evidence of the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, the prayer of a woman is better in the home and that is a general, complete and comprehensive statement whether for her obligatory prayers of her voluntary ones. In terms of the congregational prayer, it is obligatory upon every sane Muslim man who has reached puberty to attend it and there are many hadeeths showing this.
Malik reports that Yahya related from Abu’zZinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “By Him in whose hand myself is! I had in mind to order firewood to be collected, then to order the prayer to be called, and to appoint a man to lead the people in prayer, and then to come up behind certain men and burn their houses down about them!…’
One of the points that we can draw from this hadeeth is the obligation to attend the congregation and this is a right upon the men in their obligatory prayers. This hadeeth also gives a severe warning to those who keep away from the congregational prayers – and congregational prayer refers to the five daily prayers in the mosque.
What remains from this answer is the right of the men with regards to their prayer of Tarawih. According to the authentic narrations of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, it is clear that all optional and voluntary prayers that a man performs are better when performed in his home and this is due to the saying narrated by Zaid bin Thabit that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, ‘…”You are still insisting (on your deed, i.e. Tarawih prayer in the mosque) that I thought that this prayer (Tarawih) might become obligatory on you.
So you people, offer this prayer at your homes, for the best prayer of a person is the one which he offers at home, except the compulsory (congregational) prayer.” (Bukhari). These hadeeths may bring confusion as they seem to contradict the hadeeth which says that if anyone prays with his imam until he moves away, it is as if he prayed the whole night (this narration can also be found with a different wording).
These two narrations can be reconciled by saying that if someone feels that he can motivate himself to pray at home then that is better for him, but on the other hand, if one feels that he lacks this motivation then he can pray at the mosque in congregation and follow the latter narration and that is also good for him if it helps him – and Allaah Knows Best.
