If your teacher got 8 in IELTS [speaking], their English is fantastic.

My tips for reading:

1. First improve your vocab and grammar before moving to different techniques. Stop painstakingly watching videos that teach techniques on reading, hoping that one day you will find the secret that we, instructors, "hiding" from you. Don't believe some guys on YouTube that show you how to get a 9 in reading by using "the technique that they themselves created".

2. Don't over/under interpret the information given in the text. You shoud have flexible levels of interpretation for each passage.

3. Don't just try to find the correct options only. You should also aim to prove for yourself why other options are incorrect even after you find the correct answer. That significantly reduces the odds of making mistakes.

4. Don't get tricked by high-level and tricky grammar structures. To do so, you should first learn those structures themselves.

5. Try to use authentic materials. The best source is those 19 Cambridge practice tests.

In short, IELTS is not something that tests how robot-like you are!

It tests your critical thinking abilities and how well you can interpret the information given. Also, succeeding in reading largely depends on strong grammar. It is not only words and epressions that give the whole meaning, tone, and purpose of the text. Grammar also plays a critical role in that. That is why I always want to slap the faces of those who say that grammar is not that important in IELTS. Yes, grammar may not be very importanat as long as you want to get 5.5 or 6. If you are happy with those scores, then don't learn grammar deeply, get your 5.5 and never come near to IELTS again!

Xullas, grammar muhimmas degan gapni yig'ishtireylik, yaxshilar!

1. Attempt to Test Critical Thinking, Not Memorization

IELTS reading tasks are designed to evaluate your ability to interpret the passage rather than recall information verbatim. Sometimes, they frame questions in a way that requires nuanced understanding, but this can backfire if the wording is unclear or ambiguous.

2. Cultural or Contextual Gaps

IELTS is a global test, and passages are written to be accessible to diverse audiences. In trying to cater to everyone, the subtlety or logic of some questions can get lost. Misinterpretations may arise if the writers fail to account for different perspectives or language nuances.

3. Focus on Grammar Over Context

Sometimes, questions hinge on the grammatical aspect of an answer (e.g., the present perfect tense in your example) rather than its contextual meaning. This can feel disconnected from the reading material and create confusion.

4. Deliberate Trickiness

IELTS sometimes includes distractor options that sound plausible but are subtly incorrect. While this is intended to challenge candidates, it can lead to questions that feel misleading or poorly constructed.

5. Translation of Complex Ideas

IELTS texts often deal with complex or specialized topics. In simplifying these for test-takers, subtle errors or oversights in phrasing can result in questions that seem nonsensical or contradictory.

Sometimes, IELTS candidates may face some very challenging, tricky, and absurd questions while doing reading tests, especially in passage 3.

This is not because of the "flaws" of IELTS. It is a highly standard test. There are valid reasons for this. Now, I will send some of these reasons.
