"We hold our tongues in check because if they are undisciplined they empty the soul of the strength of heavenly grace, and weaken its healthful vigour."

- St Peter Damian

Died - 22 February, 1027
Feast Day - 21 February

Cardinal & Doctor of the Church

Known for his fasting, penance and long hours of prayer. In his sermons and writings he encouraged others to restore discipline in their lives.

As we begin our Lenten journey, St Peter Damian, pray for us 🙏

“O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, faintheartedness, lust of power, and idle talk.

“But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love to your servant.

“Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own sin and not to judge my brother, for You are blessed from all ages to all ages. Amen”

- St. Ephraim the Syrian

“No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.”

- John Chrysostom

Jacinta and Francisco Marto, two of the three shepherd children who witnessed the Marian apparitions, were canonised on the 100th anniversary of Mary's first appearance in Fatima in 1917.

They both died before the age of twelve. The third seer, Lucia, died age 97 in 2005.

❤️

Tell everybody that God grants His graces through the Immaculate Heart of Mary; that people are to ask her for them; and that the heart of Jesus wants the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be venerated at His side.

Tell them also to pray to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for peace, since God has entrusted it to her.

- St Jacinta Marto's message to the world as told to her cousin, Lucia

PSALM 139
1 [For the choirmaster Of David Psalm] Yahweh, you examine me and know me,

2 you know when I sit, when I rise, you understand my thoughts from afar.

3 You watch when I walk or lie down, you know every detail of my conduct.

4 A word is not yet on my tongue before you, Yahweh, know all about it.

5 You fence me in, behind and in front, you have laid your hand upon me.

6 Such amazing knowledge is beyond me, a height to which I cannot attain.

7 Where shall I go to escape your spirit? Where shall I flee from your presence?

8 If I scale the heavens you are there, if I lie flat in Sheol, there you are.

9 If I speed away on the wings of the dawn, if I dwell beyond the ocean,

10 even there your hand will be guiding me, your right hand holding me fast.

11 I will say, 'Let the darkness cover me, and the night wrap itself around me,'

12 even darkness to you is not dark, and night is as clear as the day.

13 You created my inmost self, knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 For so many marvels I thank you; a wonder am I, and all your works are wonders. You knew me through and through,

15 my being held no secrets from you, when I was being formed in secret, textured in the depths of the earth.

16 Your eyes could see my embryo. In your book all my days were inscribed, every one that was fixed is there.

17 How hard for me to grasp your thoughts, how many, God, there are!

18 If I count them, they are more than the grains of sand; if I come to an end, I am still with you.

19 If only, God, you would kill the wicked!-Men of violence, keep away from me!-

20 those who speak blasphemously about you, and take no account of your thoughts.

21 Yahweh, do I not hate those who hate you, and loathe those who defy you?

22 My hate for them has no limits, I regard them as my own enemies.

23 God, examine me and know my heart, test me and know my concerns.

24 Make sure that I am not on my way to ruin, and guide me on the road of eternity.

A Prayer by Jean Petit to Perfect All Human Suffering

Within the human heart, Divine Charity can make up for what is lacking in the sufferings of the world, because fire transforms everything into itself.

In my childlike heart, I will carefully gather all the incomplete trials of the entire world, those of all peoples, all races, and all times, and will make them my own. I will let none be wasted. The ardor of the flames to which my poverty has given refuge will melt all these inadequate works and will separate the pure metal from the dross.

- Jean Petit
Descending Fire: The Journal of a Soul Aflame (2000)

Are you troubled? Think but of Jesus – speak but the name of Jesus, the clouds disperse and peace descends anew from heaven.
Have you fallen into sin? So that you fear death?
..invoke the name of Jesus and you will soon feel life returning. No obduracy of the soul, no weakness, no coldness of heart can resist this holy name – there is no heart which will not soften and open in tears at this holy name.

- St Bernard of Clairvaux

The stench of impurity before God and the angels is so great, that no stench in the world can equal it.”
~St. Philip Neri

1 Corinthians

Chapter 13

4
* Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated,
5
it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,
6
it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
7
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

💞Everything done out of love acquires greatness and beauty.

- St Josemaría Escriva

It is not so essential to think much as to love much.

-St Teresa of Jesus, OCD

"Peace is the simplicity of heart, serenity of mind, tranquility of soul, the bond of love."
💌
- Pio of Pietrelcina

Simple is the bond,
Family for life!

"Put the salvation of your soul first, our Lord Jesus Christ tells us, because that is the only thing you ought really to have at heart. How rare are those Christians who are ready to suffer than to jeopardize the salvation of their souls."

- Saint John Vianney.

OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN - thank You for giving me Your Son

HALLOWED BE THY NAME - give me the courage to hold Your name in reverence and never use it in vain.

THY KINGDOM COME - let all men acknowledge You as Lord in their lives.

THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN - Give me the grace to live in the present moment. Let me see You, Lord Father, in everything that happens to me, in everyone that crosses my path. Let my heart ever sing one melody of union with Your Will.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD - thank You for Jesus in the Eucharist, for Your food in Scripture, for Your Presence in my neighbour and in my soul and for the bread that nourishes my body.

AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US - O Lord, give me a merciful spirit and a forgiving heart so You may say to me at death - "I forgive You - I understand."

AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION - Give me the grace to prove my love for You by overcoming the world, myself and the enemy.

BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL - Protect me from the cunning and subtle temptations of the enemy. Let Your angels surround me with their power and St Michael defend me in my battles.

- Mother Angelica

Prepare for the Lentern season with the Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus commencing 12 February, 2023.

The Feast day is Shrove Tuesday, 21 February.

Our Lord Jesus Christ has promised to those who honour His Holy Face:

"By offering my face to My eternal Father, nothing will be refused, and the conversion of many sinners will be obtained."

Ecce crucem Domini ✝️

Popular tradition tells us that Anthony gave a prayer to a poor woman who sought help against the temptations of the devil. Pope Sixtus V, a Franciscan, engraved this prayer, which is also known as the ‘Motto of St. Anthony’, at the base of the obelisk he erected in St. Peter's Square in Rome. Here it is in the original Latin:

Ecce Crucem Domini!
Fugite partes adversae!
Vicit Leo de tribu Juda,
Radix David! Alleluia!

Translation

Behold the Cross of the Lord!
Be gone all evil powers!
The Lion of the tribe of Judah,
The root of David has conquered!
Alleluia!

This short prayer is like a small exorcism. We too can use it - in Latin or in English - to help us overcome temptations.
