Major Hacking Attack on Middle East Eye: Spyware with “strong links” to Israeli firm blacklisted by US suspected
The so-called “watering hole” that targeted the outlet's website in April 2020 has alleged links to Candiru - a highly-secretive Israeli firm that sells spyware to govts. (Online security firm ESET reported)
The editor-in-chief of the Middle East Eye said the outlet is, “No stranger to such attempts to take our website down by state and non-state actors.” Before adding, ”They have not stopped us reporting what is going on in all corners of the region and it will not stop us in future.”
It remains unclear how the spyware took control of MEE's website, who exactly was targeted and what they obtained as a result of the hack.
