Alessandro Slebir, a 23-year-old from California, potentially broke the world record for the largest wave ever surfed with a 108-foot (32.9 meters) wave at Mavericks near Half Moon Bay. This occurred during the same storm that destroyed the Santa Cruz Wharf. The current record, held by Sebastian Steudtner, stands at 86 feet (26.2 meters) from a wave in Portugal, which took 18 months for Guinness World Records to confirm. Despite the potential record, Slebir emphasized that the significance to him was personal, stating to SFGate that it was the biggest wave he had ever surfed, regardless of official measurements.
