It's easy to cast blame for Syria's downfall in a sea of misinformation.
It was Russia. It was Iran. It was Assad.
But to downplay sanctions, occupation, and 13+ years of war ("frozen" or not) is a rejection of reality.
The end of independent, secular Syria in the final analysis falls at the feet of US EMPIRE.
The US, Israel, Turkey, and NATO spent years doing everything they could to overthrow Assad.
In the end, they succeeded. Whatever errors made by those resisting empire however significant cannot be divorced from historical context.
The real lesson of Syria should be that the Palestine solidarity and anti-war movements in the US are in need of course correction, as Syria and so many other targeted states were NEVER adequately defended or worse, slandered endlessly in alignment with the empire's dictates.
We need to do better.
