How can I teach myself sight reading?
My case is somewhat particular. I’m not a beginner, and I know music theory (what notes mean and how to decipher the symbols) I also know what scales, chords, circle of fifths and fourths and so on. However, I am not even close to fast enough at reading let alone read and play.
I learn new pieces by ear and visually, using midi and Synthesia (an app that visualizes what notes are played) and I am pretty good at it. I memorize pieces and play them well that way, even complicated classical ones like Impromptu Fantasie, and Beethoven‘s moonlight 3rd. Knowing chord progressions and scales and structures make it easy for me to learn pieces by heart so I never bothered with the sheet music.
The reason I picked up playing as a kid is because I loved these classical pieces and didn’t have the money to sit through proper lessons, so I learned by ear. Now, 5 years later, I am facing the consequences of not learning sight reading. I have to memorize pieces to play them and it takes much longer to jump into a new piece than a trained player can.
Now here’s my question: what resources, books, courses, videos, etc, do you recommend for someone who isn’t new to music or its theory, but a novice when it comes to sight reading and playing in real time? Most books treat the reader as an absolute beginner in theory, which I don’t think I am really.
Any help would be much appreciated!
