🇷🇺 On August 22, Russia marks National Flag Day, established by a Presidential Decree in 1994.

On this day, we pay tribute to one of Russia’s official state symbols, which, together with the national emblem and anthem, represents the country’s sovereignty and independence and reflects the continuity of generations of its multinational people.

Today, the Russian flag is also a visible symbol of protection and the future. In the special military operation zone, servicemen raise the tricolour over liberated settlements.

***

The history of the Russian tricolour spans more than three centuries. In 1693, the young Peter the Great raised it as his personal standard in Arkhangelsk, and in 1705 he ordered the white-blue-red flag to be flown on merchant ships. Until the 19th century, Russian sailors would erect a commemorative cross on the shores of newly acquired territories.

In 1806, a new tradition emerged. A Russian expedition explored the coast of southern Sakhalin and raised two flags on shore. The St Andrew’s Flag symbolised the role of the Russian Navy, while the white-blue-red flag marked the territory as a new Russian possession. The tricolour became the national flag in 1896, on the eve of the coronation of Nicholas II.

⚪️🔵🔴 On December 25, 2000, the Federal Constitutional Law “On the State Flag of the Russian Federation” was adopted. Under the law, the State Flag of Russia is a rectangular cloth consisting of three equal horizontal stripes: white on top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom.

💬 President of Russia Vladimir Putin:
Russia is a thousand-year-old country and civilisation, and our national flag is a symbol of our unity.

I am confident that the national flag will always inspire us to move only forward — towards victory — and to uphold the glory of Russia.

☢️ Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant (#ZNPP):

On August 18, Ukrainian militants carried out a deliberate strike on a staff transport stop in Energodar, where employees of the ZNPP were waiting for a bus to take them to work.

▪️ The attack resulted in 17 casualties, most of them ZNPP employees. One nuclear plant worker was killed. Three of the injured are in moderate condition. All those injured are receiving the necessary medical care.

This crosses every line.

Those targeted were civilians. They were not involved in the fighting or taking part in hostilities. They were simply on their way to work – to carry out their professional duties and help ensure the safe operation of the nuclear power plant.

A deliberate attack on ZNPP personnel is an attack on the very people responsible for nuclear safety. The safety of the plant, Energodar and the vast surrounding area depends on their work.

The Kiev regime has once again shown that it is prepared to put civilian lives and the safety of a nuclear facility at risk.

❗️ Nuclear plant workers must never be made targets. Under any circumstances.

📆 27-31 июля с.г.

🌟 On August 18, 1945, during the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation, Soviet forces launched the Kuril Islands Landing Operation, an amphibious assault aimed at liberating the archipelago from Japanese militarists.

Preparations for the operation were carried out within an extremely tight timeframe. Major General Alexey Gnechko, Commander of the Kamchatka Defence Area, received the order to launch the offensive on August 15, 1945 – just two days before the operation began.

The plan called for a surprise amphibious landing on the northwestern coast of Shumshu Island, accompanied by a main strike against the Kataoka naval base. After securing the island, Soviet forces were to use it as a bridgehead to liberate Paramushir, Onekotan and the other islands.

Hitler's allies were determined to hold the archipelago at any cost and had turned the Kuril Islands into a powerful fortified stronghold. 👉 The main defensive line across the Kuril chain consisted of a well-developed network of strongpoints, numerous pillboxes and reinforced-concrete shelters for troops. The defences were particularly formidable on Shumshu and Paramushir.

***

⚔️ The operation to drive the militarists from the Kuril Islands began on the night of August 18. Soviet troops had to disembark from ships in water up to two metres deep and make their way ashore under enemy artillery fire. The main landing force came under heavy flanking fire from Japanese batteries.

By the evening of August 18, thanks to the decisive and coordinated actions of the main force and advance units, Soviet troops had taken control of Heights 165 and 171.

On the morning of August 19, negotiations began on the surrender of the Japanese forces. By August 23, Japanese troops began surrendering en masse. Thanks to the decisive actions of the Pacific Fleet sailors, the entire Kuril Island chain was secured between August 24 and September 1.

💬 Excerpt from Joseph Stalin's address to the people on September 2, 1945:
Today, September 2, political and military representatives of Japan signed an act of unconditional surrender.

Utterly defeated on sea and land, and completely surrounded by the armed forces of the United Nations, Japan has admitted defeat and has laid down her arms. [...]

This means that the southern part of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands revert to the Soviet Union and henceforth will serve not as a barrier between the Soviet Union and the ocean and as a base for Japanese attack upon our Far East but as a direct means of communication between the Soviet Union and the ocean and a base for the defence of our country against Japanese aggression.

❗️ The Kuril Islands Landing Operation fundamentally changed the strategic situation in the Far East and predetermined the defeat of Japanese militarism, thereby accelerating the end of World War II.

The liberation of the Kuril Islands not only strengthened the country’s defensive positions but also provided the Soviet Union with a strategically important foothold in the Pacific.

✉️ President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent his greetings to participants, organisers and guests of the 4th International Buddhist Forum – Buddhism in the Dialogue of Cultures: The Future of Humanity.

✍️ The message reads, in part:
It is symbolic that, in the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia, your Forum is being held in the Republic of Tuva, one of the recognised centres of Russian Buddhism.

The ancient land of Tuva is renowned for its rich, centuries-old history, natural beauty, and the warmth and hospitality of its people. Here, its priceless cultural and spiritual heritage is carefully preserved, while young people are raised to respect the way of life and distinctive traditions of their ancestors.

☝️ I would like to emphasise that, as an important and integral part of the global Buddhist community, the Russian sangha makes a significant contribution to promoting interethnic harmony and advancing the ideals of goodness and justice.

It actively develops fruitful cooperation with Buddhist religious organisations and academic institutions abroad on a broad range of religious, humanitarian and universal human issues, and plays an active role in implementing joint projects and initiatives in other areas.

I am confident that expanding partnerships, business contacts and friendly ties among Buddhists from different countries will provide a solid foundation for strengthening friendship, trust and mutual understanding among the peoples of Eurasia and will help preserve traditional spiritual and moral values.

💬 Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova:

On August 17, with the assistance of the Office of the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights, a 14-year-old girl has returned to Russia. Born in Moscow, she later moved to Ukraine to live with her grandmother. Her mother continued to visit her, and the two remained in close contact.

After the start of the special military operation, the mother was unable to bring her daughter back on her own and turned to the International Committee of the Red Cross for assistance. The ICRC then contacted our office, and following a complex process of coordination and arrangements, the girl was finally able to return home.

The Children’s Rights Commissioners are carrying out this humanitarian work to reunite families on the instructions of President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

We are particularly grateful to First Lady of the US Melania Trump for her active involvement in efforts to reunite children with their families.

☝️ To date, with the participation of the Children’s Rights Commissioners, 32 children from 24 families have been reunited with relatives in Russia, while 145 children from 118 families have been reunited with relatives in Ukraine and third countries.

🤝 With the support of Melania Trump, 34 children have been reunited with their loved ones in Russia, Ukraine and third countries.

🥟 On 13 of August the Russian Embassy hosted a masterclass in making traditional Russian dumplings 'pelmeni' for ASEAN resident missions in New Zealand.

During the event, guests were introduced to the preparation technique of pelmeni, as well as to the historical and cultural particularities that distinguish this dish from similar culinary traditions elsewhere. The masterclass concluded with a tasting of the freshly prepared dumplings.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the ASEAN Missions for their participation and keen interest.

🌟 On August 15, 1945, the Soviet forces liberated Korea from Japanese colonial rule as part of the Manchurian strategic offensive. The Red Army fought side by side with the Korean patriots against the Japanese militarist regime, defeated the Kwantung Army and liberated the people of Korea, bringing #WW2 in the Far East to an end.

***

The Korean Peninsula was under Japanese occupation for 35 years. In fact, Tokyo established its protectorate over the Peninsula back in 1905 and fully annexed it five years later. The Japanese regime, established in Korea in 1910, was excessively brutal, with the colonial administration intent on seizing all the natural resources they could procure in this region. The Japanese criminals employed harsh repressive measures against the local population. There was an intentional effort to eradicate the Korean language and national culture.

During WWII, the Allied powers devoted considerable attention to liberating Korea in their discussions. In December 1943, China, the United States and the UK adopted the Cairo Declaration (the USSR joined it too). According to the document, the Parties agreed that “Japan will be expelled from all other territories which she has taken by violence and greed….” At the Yalta Conference, the Soviet Union took the commitment to enter the war against Japan after defeating Nazi Germany in Europe.

⚔️ On August 9, 1945, the Red Army launched Manchurian strategic offensive. The Soviet forces succeeded in rapidly advancing to northeast China. With the support of partisans of the Korean national liberation movement, the Soviet soldiers liberators were pushing south and sought to break through Japan’s defence lines along the frontline stretching for as much as 5'000 kilometres.

On the first day of the operation, Kyonghung, a Korean county, as well as Unggi, Najin, Chongjin, Wonsan and other cities were liberated. By advancing in coordination with the Korean patriots, the Red Army succeeded in expelling the Japanese from the Peninsula’s northern part by mid-August, having defeated the Kwantung Army.

On August 14, Emperor Hirohito accepted Japan’s unconditional surrender and announced it to the nation.

Today, both Pyongyang and Seoul mark August 15 as the National Liberation Day of Korea.

#SovietSoldierSavedTheWorld: The battle for liberty and independence of the Korean nation claimed the lives of 12’000 Soviet soldiers and officers. In August 1946, Pyongyang honoured their memory by erecting a monument as a gesture of gratitude to the Soviet soldiers liberators (👉 Learn more about the Manchurian strategic offensive and the heroism of the Soviet soldiers in liberating northeastern China and Korea in our in-depth historical feature).

💬 Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department Alexey Fadeev:
We are deeply grateful to our Korean friends for the exemplary care they have taken of the Soviet soldiers’ graves and for their respect of our shared history.

The civilised and responsible approach demonstrated by the DPRK in preserving military memorials stands in stark contrast to the situation in a number of Eastern European countries, where monuments to the Soviet liberator soldiers are being barbarically destroyed while Hitler’s henchmen and convicted war criminals are being honoured

The traditions of comradeship in arms established in 1945 have provided a solid foundation for promoting friendly and neighbourly relations between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the new era. The allied nature of bilateral relations forged through the bonds of comradeship in arms has been fully reflected in the DPRK’s firm support for Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.

Eternal memory to the DPRK servicemen who fell in the battles to liberate the Kursk Region from Ukrainian neo-Nazis and foreign mercenaries.

🎙 Comment by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova regarding plans by the United States and Türkiye to supply arms to Kiev (August 15, 2026)

❓ Question: There have been alarming reports lately on the possible delivery of a large shipment of US-made weapons and munitions to Ukraine, which are currently at the disposal of the Turkish Republic. What would be your comment in this regard?

💬 Maria Zakharova: Judging by the documents, which were recently released by the US Congress, this can be quite a considerable arsenal, including offensive weapons.

In particular, these papers mention 12 multiple rocket launch systems and more than 2,500 non-guided cluster munitions for them, as well as 47,000 203-mm cluster shells and 70 ATACMS short-range missiles.

What jumps to the eye are all the remaining contradictions and inconsistencies regarding the circumstances and terms for delivering such a big load of lethal products.

It remains unclear who initiated this project to re-export weapons, how they will be transported and when this large lethal shipment will be sent to its receivers in Kiev. Finally, what were the parties involved in this deal thinking, namely the United States and Türkiye, when they decided to open yet another Pandora’s box to make the Banderite regime last longer in its agony while claiming more lives?

Moreover, these are countries which have been aspiring to play a special role in settling the Ukraine crisis and which have been saying that finding a political and diplomatic solution was their priority.

❗️ Pumping the Zelensky junta full of weapons will do nothing to affect the course of the special military operation in any meaningful way in terms of diverting it from Russia’s righteous scenario.

However, there will be no way to avoid damage across the board from these deliveries. This is not only a matter of victims and destruction and Kiev’s determination to cause harm at a larger scale, but also a matter of dealing with a severe blow to Russia’s bilateral relations with Washington and Ankara.

Attempts to exploit a peace-making rhetoric while supplying the Ukrainian Nazis with weapons inevitably undermine mutual trust, especially considering the fact that the Turkish authorities have made multiple assurances that they were committed to refraining from delivering lethal weapons to Kiev.

The Foreign Ministry has requested explanations from Washington and Ankara in connection with the information as announced by US Congress.

👉 There is still time to take a sober look at this whole situation.
