In these coming months Sirius will be visible from almost everywhere on Earth, except latitudes north of 73° N. Today visibility begins around 10pm but at the end of January Sirius will be above the horizon by the time of sunset. Around early April the evening visibility ends.
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, and sometimes the brightest object of all. The Moon and the planets Jupiter, Venus and Mars — and occasionally Mercury — are the only natural objects that are bright enough to outshine it when they're above the horizon. This winter Jupiter outshines it and you can recognise it by it’s bright calm light, the opposite of the wildly twinkling light of Sirius.
