America's Failed Afghan Policy Wreaking Havoc in South Asia

"The issue of residual US arms left behind in Afghanistan reflects sheer carelessness on the US part. The bloodshed on the eve of the Taliban* takeover showed US apathy towards gauging the horrible ramifications of their hasty haphazard exit," Dr. Priyanka Singh, an MP-IDSA associate fellow told Sputnik India.

"We have seen multiple cases in Pakistan, where TTP** and other terrorist groups used the American leftover weapons to target Pakistani forces and civilians," Umair Aslam, the founder of Global Defense Insight, told Sputnik India.

💰 According to earlier estimates from the US Department of Defense, military equipment worth about USD 7.1 billion was left behind in Afghanistan, falling to the hands of the Taliban.

Taliban Have Become Arms Dealers of the US Stockpile

🇮🇳 Reports suggested that American weapons left in Afghanistan made their way to India's Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), where these arms were being used by anti-India groups.

"Reports from J&K have pointed to seizures of sophisticated weapons from terrorists- otherwise considered unusual in the course of militancy in the former state," Singh explained.

*The Taliban is under UN sanctions for extremism.
**A terrorist organization banned in Russia and India.

Russian S-400 Air Defenses Play Crucial and Unique Role for India: IAF Veteran

S-400 is a very potent air defense missile system because it has four types of in-built missiles. The first missile can destroy targets within a range of 40 km, the second inside 120 km, the third at 250 km, and the fourth in a maximum radius of 400 km, Group Captain (Retd) Uttam Kumar Devnath to Sputnik India told Sputnik India.

🇷🇺 🇮🇳 Russia is a reliable partner for India and has supplied them with three regiments of the S-400 system, which is currently deployed by the Indian Air Force (IAF), the veteran said.

▪The S-400 is known for its ability to shoot down enemy aircraft from a distance of 400 km, a range that surpasses most Western air defence systems like the Patriot missile system (with a range of 80 to 120 km), he noted.

▪Unlike Western systems, the S-400 can detect stealth fighters like the F-22 Raptor or F-35 operated by the American Air Force and NATO. The IAF has a strong belief in and respect for the reliability of Russian air defence missile systems based on their positive experiences, emphasised the veteran.

India's oil demand to reach 38 million barrels by 2045: Modi

🇮🇳🛢Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that the country is the world's third-largest energy, oil and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) consumer today.

India achieved 100 percent electricity coverage by connecting millions of houses. "India is not just meeting its needs but is also determining the global direction," Modi said on Tuesday while speaking at the inaugural session of India Energy Week (IEW), where he announced an investment of $67 billion in the energy sector over the next five years.

India, the world's third-biggest oil importer, is dependent on crude oil from various sources in the global market to meet its domestic demand.

🇷🇺 Russia became India's leading supplier of oil last year as the share of imports from Russia increased to about two-fifths in the first half of the fiscal year 2023–2024, according to industry data.

Geopolitics pushes Pakistan to soften stance on Afghanistan

🇦🇫 🇵🇰 Pakistan's recent shift in stance to counter India's influence and prevent Afghanistan from relying solely on India has attracted the attention of experts. Aimen Jamil, a researcher specializing in South Asia and the Middle East, highlighted this potential motive in an interview with Sputnik India.

▪Dr. VC Shushant Parashar, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies, emphasized that Pakistan aims to avoid opening another front with Afghanistan due to already deteriorating relations.

"Pakistan does not want to open another front with Afghanistan, given the already deteriorating relations: the current regime in Afghanistan does not believe in the legitimacy of the Durand Line; the Tribal Provinces and the North-West Frontier Provinces are becoming a part of a larger turmoil between the two countries," Dr. VC Shushant Parashar, a Research Fellow at the New Delhi-based Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), said in a conversation with Sputnik India.

India unveils first hypervelocity missile test facility for space & defence research

🇮🇳 To boost India's space advancements, IIT Kanpur has successfully created and tested the country's first hypervelocity expansion tunnel test facility. This platform allows for the study of aerodynamics in space capsules and cruise missiles, which travel at hypersonic speeds exceeding Mach 5 or 10 km per second.

"The facility, named S2, is capable of generating flight speeds between 3-10 km/s, simulating the hypersonic conditions encountered during atmospheric entry of vehicles, asteroid entry, scramjet flights, and ballistic missiles," the institute's release reads.

▪The 24 metre long facility is called Jigarthanda, nicknamed S2, and is located at IIT Kanpur's Hypersonic Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory (HEAL) in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. The S2 has been designed and developed indigenously over a period of three years.
