Welcome to Moscow! 💜

A city where public transport runs like clockwork. Want to navigate Moscow’s transport system with confidence? Here’s everything you need to know⬆️

🌏 Russia.study

The Russian healthcare system is quite accessible, as long as you know how to navigate it.

Let’s start with your insurance policy. Every international student must have one — it’s part of the required documentation. Make sure your policy is active and check which clinics are covered.

📎 Pro Tip: save a photo of your policy on your phone. Paper copies have an uncanny way of disappearing when you need them most.

If you’re feeling unwell, your first stop should be a state polyclinic. Public healthcare facilities accept insurance, so you won’t have to pay out of pocket. Find the clinic linked to your address or listed in your policy, and bring your passport, insurance policy, and student ID.

In more serious situations, don’t hesitate — call 103 for an ambulance. This service is free, regardless of your insurance.

For minor issues, like a cold or a headache, a visit to the pharmacy should suffice.

❗️The key is not to delay. If you’re feeling unwell, seek help promptly. Take care of your health — there’s so much to explore in Russia, but you’ll enjoy it best when you’re feeling your best!

A Russian winter is like a test of endurance. But with the right approach, winter can transform from an enemy into the coziest season of the year 🔥

🔵 Layering is your best friend
It’s not just about staying warm—it’s about flexibility. Head indoors? Take off a layer. Going back outside? Add it on. Don’t forget a hat and gloves—up to 30% of body heat escapes through your head and hands!

🔵 Warm food and drinks
Winter is the perfect time for hearty soups, hot chocolate, mulled wine, or tea with ginger and lemon.

📎 Pro Tip: Heated Insoles
Pair them with thick wool socks over your regular ones for maximum warmth.

🔵 Stay active to stay warm
You don’t need a ski resort to get moving. A brisk 20-minute walk in the park can boost your circulation and mood. Indoors? Try yoga or quick workout routines for winter warm-ups.

🔵 Winter superfoods
Stock up on foods that boost your energy: honey, cranberries, sea buckthorn, and ginger.

🔵 Create a cozy home oasis
Turn your home into a sanctuary where the cold stays outside. Warm blankets, soft lighting, candles with wintery scents, and wool socks can transform your space and mood.

Stay warm and savor the season!

Think Russians are always late? Think again! Business meetings here run like a well-oiled clock — punctuality is practically sacred. But throw a social gathering into the mix, and suddenly, time becomes a suggestion, not a rule.

🖇 Russian time expressions: decoded
"Five Minutes"
Translation: "I'll be there... eventually."
Reality: Could mean five minutes, 15, or the length of a Lord of the Rings marathon.

"Around Seven"
Translation: "Somewhere in the ballpark of 7:00."
Reality: 6:45 to 8:15 is fair game. Pro tip: don’t hold your breath at 6:59.

"Soon"

Translation: "Hold tight."
Reality: Could be a moment. Could be a millennium.

"For a Minute"
Translation: "Just popping in."
Reality: Clear your schedule. They’re staying for tea, cookies, and your life story.

How to master Russian timing ⚪️

1⃣ Be Zen
Think of waiting as a chance to reflect on life — or at least to scroll socials guilt-free.

2⃣ Double check
Need someone to be on time? Confirm the timing, then confirm the confirmation.

3⃣ Show up promptly for business meetings
Want to impress your Russian colleagues? Be the Swiss watch of the room.

4⃣ Relax in social settings
If your friend shows up late, remember—it’s not personal. It’s cultural.

So, while Russian timekeeping might feel like a puzzle wrapped in a mystery, it’s all part of the charm. When in doubt, embrace the unpredictability and go with the flow. Because really, isn't the best timing any time spent together? (Even if it starts a bit late)

Is “negotiating” with professors a thing ⁉️

Many students see professors as distant and unapproachable. This stereotype can make it difficult to discuss needs. In reality, professors are often more open to dialogue than students realize.

❗️Good communication is essential for building strong relationships with professors. Here are some tips to connect better:

1⃣ When approaching a professor, especially about important matters, come with specific questions or points in mind.
2⃣ Professors set aside time for student meetings, when you can lead to more personal interactions and demonstrate your commitment to your studies.
3⃣ Different professors have different communication styles. Some prefer emails, while others like face-to-face meetings.
4⃣ Make sure to listen carefully when your professor speaks; this helps create a friendly and open environment.

📎 Additional Tip: Creating good relationships with professors is important for both immediate needs and future career development. You can strengthen these connections by attending events or workshops hosted by them, by seeking feedback throughout the semester, by sending thank-you emails expressing appreciation for their time and advice. This keeps the relationship positive and open, turning the student-professor dynamic into one of collaboration and mutual respect.

Why is Tatiana Day celebrated in Russia, and how did It become Student’s Day?

😍 Okay, explain to me why all students are so happy on January 25th? Exams just ended!
😔 That’s the secret, my friend. Tatiana Day is a holiday for those who survived exam season!

On a serious note, January 25th brings together history, student spirit, and a touch of religion. How did it all happen?

⁉️ What’s the connection between Tatiana and students

It all ties back to Moscow universities and… Saint Tatiana. In 1755, Empress Elizabeth signed the decree to establish Moscow University. Why January 25th? Because it’s the feast day of Saint Tatiana, considered the patron saint of students.

⁉️ From prayer to parties

Initially, students gathered in churches to thank Saint Tatiana, then went… to celebrate! Back then, the holiday involved grand student feasts with songs and wine. Today’s parties are more modern, but the essence remains: the end of exams and a chance to breathe freely.

⁉️ Why does this matter

If you’re a student in Russia, this day is all about you. Tatiana Day is a moment to say, “I made it. I passed (or almost passed) my exams.” And if you’re not a student, it’s a great opportunity to congratulate any Tatiana you know—it’s also their name day!

🎄 How do Russian universities get ready for New Year?

December has only just begun, but students are already juggling exams with dreams of the holiday season 😔 It’s like mandarin oranges and tinsel are waiting just behind every door.

Here’s a quick checklist of all the essential holiday happenings on campus so you won’t miss out!

1⃣ Christmas trees, photo zones, and selfies to remember
Classic: trees go up in the foyer, and next to them—photo zones decorated with glittering garlands where everyone tries to snap at least one festive pic.

2⃣ House concerts and shows
Each university has its own style: from cozy guitar concerts to mini-plays and student stand-up shows. It's a perfect way to escape the exam stress for a couple of hours.

3⃣ Winter activities and fun
From skiing to theater outings, students find different ways to enjoy the season together and spread holiday cheer. Keep an eye out for announcements in your group chat!

4⃣ Student-led holiday initiatives
In some universities, students organize special pre-holiday drives: collecting gifts for children in orphanages, hosting master classes, or putting on concerts for veterans. It's a great way to spread care and build holiday spirit.

5⃣ Festive vibes in class
Even in lectures, you can feel the holiday mood. Professors joke more, students are a bit more relaxed, and there’s an air of excitement for the upcoming break.

🔥 Give yourself a little holiday joy — get involved in your university’s events, snap some bright photos, and remember that exams will pass, but the memories will stay!

☕️ In Russia, tea is no ordinary beverage. It's a warm, welcoming ritual that brings people closer. Every cup is like a little slice of peace, and every pour feels like a warm hug!

Brew it bold, chat it cold ☕️
Forget quick sips and rush. In Russia, tea is brewed as strong as the bonds it creates. A full teapot means settling in, savoring good company, and filling the air with laughter and thoughtful conversations. And what’s tea without something sweet and homemade?

A spoonful of jam — Russian soul fuel 🍯
Sugar is nice, but jam? Now we're talking. Russians serve tea with spoonfuls of fruity goodness: raspberry, blackcurrant, maybe even strawberry. Dip a spoon in, add a little to your tea, and let the cozy sweetness wrap you up better than the thickest winter coat.

Bagels, pancakes, and vatrushkas galore! 🥐
Tea in Russia is never lonely — it’s surrounded by a parade of treats. Crunchy sushki bagels, fluffy pancakes, and vatrushki, those cottage-cheese-filled pastries, make any tea table feel like a celebration. If someone hands you a honey-drizzled pancake, congratulations! You’re now an honorary family member. 🎉

"For tea" — a classic Russian trick 🤝
When a Russian invites you "for tea," prepare yourself — it’s a well-disguised invitation to hours of conversation, laughter, and maybe even a full-on feast. Tea’s just the excuse; the real treat is the warm hospitality and heartfelt moments that follow.
