Born and raised in Los Angeles, United States, Joshua began moving to South Korea at the age of 18 to become a trainee at Pledis Entertainment. When Joshua went to a Korean festival in LA, he was cast by Pledis Entertainment staff. After that, he decided to join his agency in 2013 and underwent a training period of approximately 2 years and 2 months.
