⚡️A Harvard Student from the Academic Lyceum of WIUT

No IBs. No A-levels. No APs. Good old SAT 1520 and IELTS 8.0.

It has been a challenging year-long journey, and I am so proud of the personal transformation he has undergone.

Mishael brought flowers to the office to celebrate today's Ivy League acceptances.

We have put so much on the line this year—our sacrifices, sleepless nights, and ambitious investments stayed out of the spotlight.

Dr. Lyusyena, Sanjar, Sega, Mishael, Alisher, Tais, Lana, Diyorbek, and Meherwan—thank you for delivering this year.

I am so grateful to have a team that pushed me and the Freshman community to our absolute limits.

Early admissions are far from over yet. More decisions are coming. But, as always, no expectations. Silently and methodically working towards a shared goal.

Harvard +1. Cornell+1. Freshman is sooo back!

🥲SAT English Distribution (UPenn’s example)

Stay skeptical when admissions offices claim that “they consider your exam scores in your unique contexts.”

Above is the distribution of SAT scores among UPenn’s admitted students. (Source: Common Data Set).

Evidently, only 5% of admitted students received 699 or lower on the SAT English section.

Who are these 5%? I suspect those are athletes, donors, or students who can compensate with A-levels, IBs, or APs.

Your GPA and SAT is, essentially, the first line of defense:

It is never, and I mean it, the reason why someone gets admitted. But it is surely the cause of why many people’s applications don’t even get to the admissions officers’ tables.

Admissions is brutal. But it is not like we did not know it.

@valeranotes

"I just don't perform well on the SAT" are the words that I often hear from students.

Having retaken the SAT five times in 2017, I know how negative self-talk builds up with each attempt.

If you are taking the exam, fall asleep tonight with the mindset that you will give your all tomorrow.

The SAT is the closest experience you have ever had to the American education. Exam preparation equipped you for rigorous undergraduate academics.

Leave for the test center while being curious about what you will learn and excited that you will be challenged.

Hype yourself up. Deliver the best you can. And, as always, have fun!

Full Support 2024: Two More Slots for RD

Because of limited capacity, Full Support applications took us many weeks, if not months, to process.

I worried about our output as a team to devote dozens of hours working on each case.

As Sega and Mishael assumed full-time positions at Freshman, I feel confident we can take a few more cases.

As such, we have streamlined the review and interview process and will share our decision within 24 hours of your application.

Apply on the website, so our team will start working with you asap:

Freshman HQ Updates

A Yale-NUS graduate and Freshman's second full-time employee, Mishael arrived in Singapore yesterday.

With our increased capacity, I think of potentially admitting a few more Full Support students for this cycle.

On another note, a member of the Alumni Network is coming to Singapore in November—the office will soon host our first guest.

The next few months will be action-packed and volatile. I hope our vigorous push into Singapore will be worth it.

🐉 Night at the Temple

@valeranotes

Almost had an emergency landing. But all good now. At my friend’s place already.

A full roster of events planned for the week, after which will be heading back to Singapore.

@valeranotes

✈️ Urgent business trip on a two-day notice.

The last few weeks have been rough:

1) Logistics of hiring and boarding a new full-time employee

2) Furnishing the New Office and preparing for the Freshman’s 5th Birthday

3) New Admission Program for 50+ students, sponsored by the Youth Agency

4) Re-building Freshman’s Media team and re-designing the website.

5) Meetings for the Full Support and Admissions Programs. (Lagging on my July Program meetings. But when this happens, I try to compensate with additional meetings).

This is just the tip of the iceberg of all the tasks I had to be engaged in. A bit overwhelming, but I know I can do better.

Invited a personal assistant to help me with these tasks. Excited to see how she will help improve the efficiency of my operation.

Thank you for your patience!

🤩😂 Anyone recognizing the legend?

Yesterday, shared our first full-time job offer to a fellow Yale-NUS graduate.

We envision bringing the best students and teachers in a shared educational space.

⚡️September Consultations

Opened limited consultations in September. In just 45 minutes, you will be surprised how much we can accomplish.

For example, in a 30-minute session today, I shared 30+ edits on one student’s motivational essay.

My consultations will offer a profound analysis of your written pieces—so skip the questions you can Google.

Use our time to bounce off ideas, refine your essays, and receive targeted feedback.

🎉 Freshman’s Singapore Office: Day 1.0

Exciting times ahead!

Freshman Alumni, partners, and teachers will now have a dedicated room whenever they are in Singapore.

And yes, the views might look familiar. I’ve rented a spot in the same building I am lucky to stay with my friends.

But this time, it’s a dedicated and cosy home office for our new Singapore team.

The game is on.

📈On Score Inflation

In short, the IELTS is meant to measure your English level. Yet, it often estimates your test-taking skills, not representative of your linguistic ability.

I argue that the seeming increase in scores only partially reflects genuine improvement in the command of English.

Muhammad Ali and I agree that enhanced scores reflect the progress in English skills and test-taking domains.

Yet, we seem to disagree on which of these two factors are more or less salient in driving this growth.

🕺My Philosophy Professor Dancing at the Student-Led Show

Neil Mehta has been a legend in and out of the classroom. His teachings are foundational to what Freshman Academy has become today.

2019, the pre-pandemic days, were Yale-NUS’ golden years. Just feel the vibes of our community by following the link to the show!

Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇿

Let's never take our freedom for granted.

This morning, I had the privilege to meet Mansur, an Uzbek professional in Singapore.

You will likely soon learn more about the fully-fledged Uzbekistan Community in Singapore.

There is an exciting project in the works we are eager to support.

My Promised Books List

The first four books would not take much toll on your mental state. If anything, they will sway you away from nihilism plaguing the intellectual circles.

The rest of the list is a no-go zone without having an experienced guide helping you navigate the sheer density of provocative ideas and social-matrix-shattering perspectives.

📚Socratic Dialogues, including "Euthyphro," "Meno," "Phaedo," and "Apology."

📚Alain de Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy

📚 Fareed Zakaria's In Defense of a Liberal Education

📚 Michael Walzer's Spheres of Justice: A Defense of Pluralism and Equality

📚 Charles Taylor's The Ethics of Authenticity

📚 Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish

📚Hannah Arendt's The Human Condition

📚 Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil

And yes, do share this list! Let me know when you cover it.

I have many more titles in store from my six-year academic journey.
