Geneticists have solved one of the mysteries of nature: they found out exactly how ginger cats appear.
Here is what they have learned:
- Previously, the mechanism of the appearance of red color in cats remained unclear, unlike other animals and humans.
- Research has shown that cats have a unique genetic process at work.
- If in most animals the color of the coat determines the protein MC1R, then in cats for the red color is responsible for the recently discovered gene Arhgap36.
- The gene is located in the X chromosome and exists in two variants: "O" for red coloring, "o" for black.
- The unique gene arrangement leads to interesting combinations:
- Females with the genetic combination "Oo" become tri-colored.
- Males, having only one X chromosome, can be either ginger or black.
- The rarest tri-colored males
The "O" coloration is only produced by a genetic abnormality - the presence of an extra X chromosome.
