In a direct assault on Japanese values, the United Nations calls on Japan to pave ground for a female Monarch and accuses Japan of being on inverse side of Global Feminist trend, reports Asahi
➡️ The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) urges that the Japanese government must revise the Imperial Household Act to allow a female monarch, saying that the current male-only system is discriminating against women and female members of the Japanese Imperial Dynasty
➡️ Regarding succession to the throne, Article 2 of Chapter 1 of the Constitution clearly states:
The Imperial Throne shall be hereditary and shall be succeeded to in accordance with the provisions of the Imperial House Law passed by the Diet.
➡️ The Imperial House Law was a law promulgated in 1947, and stipulates in Article 1 of Chapter 1 that:
"The Imperial Throne shall be succeeded to by males in the male line belonging to the Imperial Line,"
➡️ This stipulates that only males who are members of the imperial family on their father's side can become emperor. Article 2 stipulates the order of succession, placing the eldest son of the emperor first.
➡️ As expected, this wasn't very well-received by the Japanese Government and society, as the Emperor isn't just a Monarch for some, but rather, too, a Pope-like figure.
➡️ Some Japanese media called the report as 'An eight-year anti-Japanese review"
➡️ In 2016, the Commission tried to refer to a review of the imperial system in its anti-Japanese review report, but there is a history of the Japanese government's counterargument and its removal in the draft stage.
➡️ Japanese Government Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said at a press conference on the morning of the 30th, "It is extremely regrettable. We have lodged a strong protest with the committee and requested that the provision be deleted."
➡️ Hayashi also mentioned that the Japanese government had explained at the review on the 17th that " the method of Imperial succession is an issue related to the foundations of the nation, and it is not appropriate to United Nations to bring it up."
