Between 18 and 24 August the market took back almost a quarter — and immediately showed the price of it

The week closed with a rally unseen in three years, and with two protocols that lost money over the same days.

What happened in seven days
• Bitcoin added 23% — its strongest week since March 2023
• Spot bitcoin funds pulled in $1.92B and ether funds $697M: a high since October 2025 for both
• Zcash climbed above $800 for the first time since 2018
• Term Labs lost $8.5M — the attacker bought up governance tokens and passed his own proposal
• The Sandbox switched off its bridge on Base and BNB Chain after unbacked SAND was minted

If you hold SAND on Base or BNB Chain, do not trade it and do not put it into pools while the bridge is off.

The US securities regulator has decided to write crypto rules instead of lawsuits

On 18 August the Commission published its Regulation Crypto Assets proposal — the first US offering regime drafted specifically for investment contracts involving crypto assets.

Regulation Crypto Assets seeks to provide market participants with clear pathways to raise capital under the federal securities laws
Paul Atkins, SEC Chairman

Two registration exemptions: a one-time one up to $5 million across four years, and a second up to $75 million in each twelve-month period, this one with financial statements and ongoing reporting attached. Plus a conditional safe harbour: complete or permanently cease every managerial effort you promised under the contract, and the asset stops being treated as subject to an investment contract.

It is still a proposal: comments are open for sixty days after publication in the Federal Register.

$984M in a single day went through builder codes on Hyperliquid — a record for the mechanism

A builder code is a third-party app attaching its own identifier to a trade and charging a fee on top of the venue fee. On 21 August those builders collected $782K in one day, the second highest on record.

The line that separates an exchange from a sportsbook

Most people assume a prediction market and a sportsbook are the same product with different branding. The US regulator describes them differently, and the wording is worth reading twice.

CFTC-regulated exchanges, brokers, or other intermediaries that provide access to prediction markets do not take a side of the trade. They provide a platform for trading and are not competing against you
CFTC

That is the structural difference. A sportsbook makes money when you are wrong, because it is on the other side of your position. An exchange makes money on volume, whichever way you go.

The second thing most people miss: you are not locked in until the event resolves. You can trade in and out before settlement, at the current price.

And every contract names its settlement source before you enter. The Fed decision market settles on the Federal Reserve. Inflation and the jobs number settle on the Bureau of Labor Statistics — not on someone's interpretation.

I broke the whole thing down in a new video: what an event contract actually is, why 70 cents means 70 percent, and the honest limits of these markets.

☀️ Bitcoin went nowhere, greed jumped seven points

• Bitcoin: $77,439 (−0.4% in 24h, +22.2% in 7 days)
• Ether: $2,446 (flat)
• Solana: $94.73 (−2.3%)
• Market cap: $2.62T (−2.1%)
• BTC dominance: 59.2%
• Sentiment: 73 greed, 66 yesterday

The first coin did not move over 24 hours and the whole cap slipped 2.1% — yet the sentiment index added seven points in a day. What is growing is not the market, it is belief in the market. Best large coin of the day is MORPHO at +19.5%, worst is XMR at −4.3%. Over the past month 20 of the 50 largest coins beat bitcoin. Trading volume $90.0B.

August 20, 07:15 UTC: a poisoned version of a package thousands of projects pull in landed in the Rust library registry

• 07:15 — arrayref 0.3.10 shipped with a dependency on the malicious crate proc-macro1
• 07:34 and 07:37 — the same with internment and append-only-vec
• 08:41–09:25 — the Rust security team deleted all three versions and locked the author's account

We do not believe the author of arrayref to be acting maliciously, but their computer or credentials are likely compromised
Rust Security Response

The poisoned versions were live for 86 to 107 minutes, and that is enough: the package downloaded its malicious payload during the build itself. Rust is what wallets, network nodes and Solana programs are written in, so anyone who builds their own code should go through their dependencies.

Grayscale is moving its Zcash trust off the over-the-counter market: NYSE Arca trading is expected on or about August 25

The manager disclosed it in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 21. The ticker stays the same, ZCSH, and the trust is to be renamed The Zcash ETF. Both dates carry the caveat "subject to the receipt of certain regulatory approvals" — the filing promises no listing on time, or at all.

Why the fund wants it. Today its shares change hands on OTC Markets, where the share price lives a life of its own and has spent years at premiums and discounts to the coins held inside. An exchange listing fixes that: professional participants get to create and redeem shares, and the price is pulled back toward the assets.

For Zcash itself this is a door into an ordinary brokerage account — a coin your broker does not carry, bought as a share your broker does.

350 milliseconds: Solana has sped up block production for the first time since launch

The network step — a slot — went from 400 milliseconds to 350. It is the first of four stages on the way to 200 ms; each next one switches on only after a supermajority of validators signs off, and per-slot work limits are cut in proportion so the load per second stays flat.

☀️ Bitcoin gave back one percent, the whole market gave back five times more

• Bitcoin: $76,903 (−1.1% in 24h, +22.3% in 7 days)
• Ether: $2,409 (−3.6%)
• Solana: $93.70 (+1.1%)
• Market cap: $2.59T (−5.6%)
• BTC dominance: 59.4%
• Sentiment: 66 greed, 71 yesterday

After a week of gains the market is catching its breath, and altcoins are doing most of the breathing: bitcoin down one percent, the whole cap down 5.6%, dominance up to 59.4%. Worst large coin of the day is SHIB at −11.5%. Over the past month only 19 of the 50 largest coins beat bitcoin. Trading volume $119.1B.

0.2% on any digital-asset transaction: two industry groups have sued the state of Illinois

The Crypto Council for Innovation and the Blockchain Association filed on August 21 in the Circuit Court of Sangamon County. They ask the court to declare the Digital Asset Tax Act unlawful and to bar the state from enforcing it, first while the case runs and then for good.

The grounds: the tax conflicts with the US Constitution, the Illinois Constitution and the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act, and the act itself was pushed through both chambers within hours with no public debate. The tax is due to take effect on January 1, 2027.

Laser Digital has been registered in Japan — the first new registration in four years

The firm belongs to the Nomura group, one of Japan's largest banks, and is now registered as a crypto-asset exchange service provider under the Payment Services Act. The previous registration of that kind was granted in October 2022.

There will be no retail venue: the work starts with supplying liquidity to domestic companies, while trading for institutional investors is promised later, with timing and scope to be announced separately.

The context matters more than the licence itself. A month ago Japan moved crypto assets under its financial instruments law, and the market was waiting to see whether the window would open for new entrants. The first one through it is not a foreign retail giant but a local bank's arm going after professional clients.

August 21, 00:10 UTC: the MANTRA Chain network was halted in full — no blocks, deposits and withdrawals frozen

A layer-1 chain for tokenized real-world assets, switched off by its own team. The day in order:

• August 18 — an upgrade brought Ethereum virtual machine compatibility to the chain
• 00:10 UTC — the halt "as a precaution", endpoints frozen
• 09:44 UTC — root cause contained: a flaw in the Cosmos EVM module, two addresses affected, no user funds exploited
• 19:28 UTC — a coordinated validator restart is being prepared

Dry run testing has been successful, v8.4.0 patches the Cosmos-EVM vulnerability, and all user funds remain safe
MANTRA Chain

What broke was not the project itself but an upstream dependency it relies on — which concerns every chain built from the same libraries. And while a chain is stopped, nothing can leave it.

☀️ Bitcoin added almost a quarter in a week, and the sentiment gauge ticked down

• Bitcoin: $78,233 (+5.7% in 24h, +23.8% in 7 days)
• Ether: $2,501 (+7.7%)
• Solana: $94.78 (+6.4%)
• Market cap: $2.68T (+2.9%)
• BTC dominance: 58.7%
• Sentiment: 71 greed, 72 yesterday

Third day of gains in a row, yet the whole market added half of what bitcoin did: money keeps flowing into the first coin and dominance holds at 58.7%. Over the past month only 20 of the 50 largest coins beat bitcoin. Trading volume $170.2B.

123,158 votes for, 115 against: GnosisDAO decided that Gnosis Chain will stop being a standalone network

The chain moves its settlement to Ethereum and becomes a zero-knowledge proven rollup. Its own validator set retires, and the treasury-funded staking subsidy goes with it. Nothing migrates for users: addresses, balances and contracts stay where they are, gas is still paid in xDAI. The first iteration is targeted for the turn of the year.

🧩 Binance has opened trading accounts to AI agents

What launched?
Agent OS, a single access layer through which AI applications connect to the exchange trading, market data, wallet and payment rails. It bundles Binance APIs, the Wallet Agentic Hub, x402 payments, the Skill Hub and new support for the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for wiring AI to external tools.

What can an agent do with the account?
In this first version: read market data, view account information and place orders.

Who holds the limits?
The account owner. The agent sits on a dedicated subaccount, permissions are set by hand and access can be revoked at any moment. The brake is not the exchange but the user settings — and so are the consequences.

546.9 million OP set aside for user airdrops has been moved into a fund run by the Optimism Foundation

The vote closed on 20 August. What remained of the User Airdrop allocation becomes the Strategic Ecosystem Fund: partnerships with chains, protocols and institutions, plus incentives for activity and liquidity on OP Mainnet.

This proposal seeks approval to re-designate the 546.9M OP remaining in the User Airdrop allocation as a new Strategic Ecosystem Fund
Optimism proposal text

The tally: 17.97M for, 10.93M against, against a quorum of 16.54M. Votable supply stood at 55.13M OP — so the fate of 12.7% of total supply was settled by roughly a third of the voting power.

The tokens stay inside the ecosystem, but the fund now decides where they go, not user wallets.

☀️ Bitcoin above $73,000, and the rest of the market is not keeping up

• Bitcoin: $73,257 (+5.5% in 24h, +15.1% in a week)
• Ether: $2,330 (+3.6%)
• Solana: $87.70 (+2.7%)
• Market cap: $2.49T (+1.6%), bitcoin dominance 58.7%
• Fear and Greed Index: 72 — greed (62 yesterday)
• 24h trading volume: $128.5B

Bitcoin added 5.5%, the whole market only 1.6%. Dominance tells the same story at 58.7%. Over the past month just 17 coins out of 50 outpaced bitcoin. Top gainer PUMP (+27.8%), worst performer M (−5.6%).

On August 19 the CFTC closed its cases against the former Alameda CEO and the FTX co-founder

A timeline in three dates:

• 23.12.2022 — the Southern District of New York found Caroline Ellison liable on two fraud counts and Gary Wang on one
• 18.08.2026 — the court entered supplemental consent orders
• 19.08.2026 — the Commission announced the actions are resolved

Ellison takes a five-year trading ban and a ten-year registration ban; Wang, five and eight. The clock runs from December 2022, so both can trade again from late 2027.

Today’s resolution further underscores the high value this Division places on robust cooperation
David I. Miller, Director of Enforcement

No penalties, no disgorgement. The reason is their cooperation, plus the $11.020 billion forfeiture order they are already jointly liable for in the criminal case.

Three FOMC members voted to raise the rate

The Federal Reserve released the minutes of its July meeting. The target range stayed at 3.50–3.75%, but the vote was nine to three: Hammack, Kashkari and Logan wanted a quarter-point hike. Several participants called price pressures broad based and argued for a more restrictive stance.

A separate worry in the minutes: the buildout of AI computing capacity is increasingly financed by borrowing, including credit from nonbank lenders.

Markets spent this week celebrating easier conditions. The minutes read the other way round. FOMC minutes.

885,000 phone numbers were run through one scheme to find the crypto owners among them

Rapid7 found an exposed directory on the operators’ server and mapped the whole chain. They call it Operation ASTERIX.

Out of a German list of 316,002 numbers, a custom checker confirmed 43,066 live Crypto.com accounts.

Then the victim got an email from the "exchange" with a case number and a code. Minutes later a "support agent" called and read out the same case number and the same code. That match across two channels does all the work.

The finish line is a link to an "updated wallet app". Rapid7 recovered fake Trezor Suite, Ledger Live and Exodus builds for macOS and Windows. The fake waits for the real app to open, kills it, and shows its own recovery screen.

A real wallet app never asks for your recovery phrase on a normal login. If it asks, it is not the real one. Rapid7 write-up.
