Here is one of the tools I've found useful especially for this larger project. The "Shinto rasp" (around £20) has a finer and more aggressive side and is excellent for removing lots of material on a curve to give your more expensive wood chisels a break. I've tried it on both seasoned and green woods to good effect.

You can even get more aggressive types with an additional handle.
