First coat of stain. Very happy with how this is turning out

What an excellent piece and finished so quickly!

Current progress. Many of you can see what I'm going for now but for those of you who haven't seen it yet, I am doing my own interpretation of the Freyr statue that was used in the Northman and currently resides in the Solvang museum.

As you can see there's still a very long way to go yet but his head is nearly ready for decorating and embellishments. The antler continues to pose a bit of a challenge however.

Main tools;
The wood chisels I prefer are made by pfiel as they seem to hold their edge very well and are extremely well made but can be very expensive. For these I generally look to second hand tool shops online and irl or ask for them as gifts from friends and family. I also have some beavercraft chisels which are a decent mid range tool as well as some cheap and nasty narex chisels to do the grunt work.
To keep them sharp I use a slipstrop by flexcut.

The pegs seen on the left are excellent for hanging out washing I hear.

Here is one of the tools I've found useful especially for this larger project. The "Shinto rasp" (around £20) has a finer and more aggressive side and is excellent for removing lots of material on a curve to give your more expensive wood chisels a break. I've tried it on both seasoned and green woods to good effect.

You can even get more aggressive types with an additional handle.

Progress on the mini-kitchen remodel. Custom made cabinetry, trowel finished walls, hand-carved legs in oak.

I love this, great application of carving in the home. Something that would have been more commonplace in times gone by.

Progress.
Every chip takes three hammer blows to remove and each one is like a drop in the ocean. Despite this I find it very meditative and i find that hours have passed and the sun has disappeared before I come back to reality and down tools.
I'm enjoying the experience of a large project far more than I anticipated.

I will post some of the tools I've found helpful so far with the hope that some of you take up woodcarving as a hobby!

This amazing Woden piece was done by The Celtic Craftsman. It was carved on a 3” thick pine slab. Truly remarkable hope to see more from him!

New Tyr idol just dropped. One of my favourites so far. Ash with a natural Danish oil finish

Excellent piece here. Lovely attention to detail especially on the knotwork

The Kingsteignton idol.

I visited the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter on saturday. They have a good collection (not much in the way of early medieval unfortunately) but my favourite item was this iron age figure carved from oak, discovered in Kingsteignton not far from my hometown.
I read about the figure years ago and forgot about it, so it was great to see it in person. I might carve a replica
