🇦🇷 Milei pledges 200 million pesos for storm-hit Bahía Blanca after criticism

Five days on from the tragedy that swept through the port city, President Javier Milei travelled Wednesday to Bahía Blanca, southern Buenos Aires Province, on Wednesday to oversee reconstruction.

Heavy storms and dangerous flooding last Friday left 16 people dead in the port city. Almost 100 people remained unaccounted for, but authorities believe most are simply unable to reach because of damage to the city's phone masts and power cuts.

Immediately after his visit, Milei pledged 200 million pesos (approximately US$185 million) for the reconstruction of the city.

🇺🇸🇨🇺 Homeland Security flies all remaining Guantanamo migrants back to US

The Trump administration has removed all the migrants who were still being held at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba and flown them back to the United States, a Defense Department official said Wednesday.

The 40 men have been transported to Louisiana, where there is a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Alexandria. It comes just two weeks after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent another group of 48 migrants back to the same city from Guantanamo.

Both of the transfers back were on ICE Air, a less expensive option compared to the 17 military flights that have transported migrants to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since the Trump administration’s migrant operation began more than a month ago.

🇨🇴 Colombia's Petro calls referendum for stalled health, labor reforms

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on Tuesday that he would call a national referendum so that voters can weigh in on his embattled health and labor reforms amid a lack of support for the proposals in the country's legislature.

The president did not immediately specify whether the reforms would be withdrawn from Congress, where he has struggled to push through the bills, which he says are necessary to fight deep inequality and lower poverty.

Petro's decision came hours after eight members of a 14-member Senate committee announced they would present a proposal to reject the government's proposed labor reform for a second time.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is leading the effort, with support from President Donald Trump, who reportedly helped sway hesitant Republicans.

The bill includes a $6 billion increase in defense spending, cuts $13 billion in non-defense discretionary spending, and boosts funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The House Freedom Caucus backs the measure, but internal GOP dissent remains.
