Climate tech might be the hot job market in 2024
Tim De Chant

One of the major stories that defined the tech sector in 2023 was layoffs. Companies large and small shed over 240,000 jobs in the last year, and while the trend has cooled of late, it hasn’t stopped, with nearly 7,000 jobs cut in November alone.
But there have been bright spots. Climate tech is one sector that has been hiring, and 2024 looks like it will be continuing the trend.
Clean energy jobs have grown 10% in the past two years, outpacing the economy as a whole, according to a report by industry group E2 . Through 2032, when the Inflation Reduction Act is set to expire, the fastest-growing job fields include wind turbine technician (45% growth) and solar photovoltaic installer (22% growth), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics

LG’s newest 32-inch 4K monitor is a looker with a smart TV inside

LG’s MyView displays will run webOS, which gives them a nice advantage over other more mundane monitors, according to LG’s announcement: they should be able to kind of work like a Chromebook, using cloud services like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace without being tethered to another computer.

Hinge: From $1M to $400M, A Dating App Success Story

🈸Dating app Hinge has experienced remarkable financial growth, jumping from less than $1 million in revenue in 2017 to a projected $400 million in 2023. CEO Justin McLeod attributes this success to word-of-mouth marketing and a focus on authenticity. The company's improved technology has made it 20 times more effective in setting up dates, debunking the idea of gatekeeping top matches.

🌍Hinge's expansion and advertising strategy hinge on helping users get more dates, fostering rapid growth. McLeod anticipates positive disruption from AI, making dating more efficient and enabling more curated matches.

Nvidia's RTX 4090 faces U.S. export restrictions, being part of a list of banned chips for China due to its AI capabilities. The company asserts full compliance with U.S. government export controls, citing extensive engagement with authorities during the chip's development, as reported by Reuters. The export restrictions primarily target chips facilitating AI applications, extending to gaming-focused processors like the RTX 4090, which, according to an October 17 Securities and Exchange Commission filing, leverages AI for enhanced performance.

Despite these challenges, Nvidia has seen remarkable success in 2023, with its shares more than tripling in price year to date. This surge is attributed, in part, to the heightened demand for AI technologies, where OpenAI's ChatGPT has played a role in generating significant industry interest.

A security researcher discovered a data leak for citizen data in bangladesh

Viktor Markopoulos found the exposed data thanks to an inadvertently cached Google search result, which exposed citizen names, addresses, phone numbers and national identity numbers from the affected website.

That’s when the country’s computer emergency incident response team, also known as CIRT, got in touch and confirmed the leaking database had been fixed. The data was spilling from none other than the country’s birth, death and marriage registrar office. CIRT confirmed in a public notice that it had resolved the data spill and that it left “no stone unturned” to understand how the leak happened. Governments seldom handle their scandals well, but an email from the government to the researcher thanking them for their finding and reporting the bug shows the government’s willingness to engage over cybersecurity where many other countries will not.

Title: ChatGPT Helps, and Worries, Business Consultants, Study Finds

The A.I. tool helped most with creative tasks. With more analytical work, however, the technology led to more mistakes.

In the near future, language bots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Meta’s Llama and Google’s Gemini are expected to take on many white-collar tasks, like copy writing, preparing legal briefs and drafting letters of recommendation. The study is one of the first to show how the technology might affect real office work — and office workers.

The study recruited management consultants from Boston Consulting Group, one of the world’s largest management-consulting firms. The company had barred its consultants from using A.I. bots in their work.

From graphic design to visual workflows, Canva’s new AI core is changing its business

Canva has crafted a wildly successful business model on the idea that graphic design should be accessible to everyone. The Australian company has raised $560 million since its founding in 2012, and is currently bringing in an annualized recurring revenue of around $1.7 billion, according to co-founder and chief product officer Cameron Adams.
Generative AI will only give users more, and smarter, content choices. In October, Canva announced a $200 million commitment over the next three years to pay out creators who consent to having their content used to train the company’s AI models. Adams said that so far, only 0.0005% of creators have opted out.

Title: New York Times sues OpenAI, Microsoft for infringing copyrighted works

The US-based newspaper accuses the companies of using millions of its articles without permission to help train chatbots.

The New York Times has sued OpenAI and Microsoft over copyright infringement, seeking to end the companies’ practice of using its stories to train chatbots.

The newspaper filed a lawsuit in the United States federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday, alleging the companies’ powerful artificial intelligence (AI) models used millions of its articles for training without permission and saying that copyright infringements at the paper alone could be worth billions.

The Times said OpenAI and Microsoft are advancing their technology through the “unlawful use of The Times’s work to create artificial intelligence products that compete with it” and “threatens The Times’s ability to provide that service”.
