In 2022 atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases reached new observed highs with globally averaged concentrations for carbon dioxide (CO2) at 417.9 ± 0.2 parts per million (ppm), methane (CH4) at 1923 ± 2 parts per billion (ppb) and nitrous oxide (N2O) at 335.8 ± 0.1 ppb, respectively 150%, 264% and 124% of pre-industrial (1750) levels.

The global mean near-surface temperature in 2023 was 1.45 ± 0.12 °C above the 1850–1900 average. 2023 was the warmest year in the 174-year observational record, clearly surpassing the previous joint warmest years, 2016 at 1.29 ± 0.12 °C above the 1850–1900 average and 2020 at 1.27±0.13 °C.

The past nine years, 2015–2023, were the nine warmest years on record.

In 2023, ocean heat content reached its highest level in the 65-year observational record.

The rate of global mean sea level rise in the past ten years (2014–2023) is more than twice the rate of sea level rise in the first decade of the satellite record (1993–2002).

Antarctic sea-ice extent reached an absolute record low for the satellite era (1979 to present) in February.

Ice extent was at a record low for the time of year from June till early November, and the annual maximum in September was around 1 million km2 below the previous record low maximum.

It was the warmest summer on record at the Summit station, 3.4 °C warmer than the 1991–2020 average and 1.0 °C warmer than the previous record.

Satellite melt-extent data indicate that the ice sheet had the third highest cumulative melt-day area43 on record (1978–2023), after the extreme melt season of 2012 and 2010.

Preliminary data indicate the annual mass balance of a global set of reference glaciers for the hydrological year 2022-2023 was –1.2 m w.e. This is nominally the largest loss of ice on record (1950-2023), driven by extremely negative mass balance in both western North America and Europe.

Conclusion? It's time to change!

Does it matter how much the United States reduces its carbon dioxide emissions if China doesn’t do the same?
Yes
, it matters. Observed and anticipated increases in greenhouse gas emissions from China and other countries don’t let Americans off the hook for reducing emissions. From a purely physical perspective, any reduction in emissions helps minimize future temperature increases. From the perspective of fairness, the United States has released more heat-trapping gases to date than either China or India, the world’s two most populous countries.

Carbon dioxide is a long-lived greenhouse gas that can linger in Earth’s atmosphere for thousands of years. Consequently, the United States bears more responsibility for the amount of warming that has occurred so far and will persist for millennia https://perma.cc/5TMZ-6B3R

Electric vehicles produce CO2 emission but the amount is largely dependent on the power plants that generate the electricity. The higher electricity demand created by the electric vehicles is met by higher fuel consumption in the power plants. Higher fuel consumption subsequently emits more CO2 emission. Coal power plant generates the highest CO2 and hydro-electric plant generates the lowest CO2.

There is linear dependence between the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and fuel consumption.

Average fuel consumption and CO2 emission of automobiles using diesel oil is lower than these characteristics of cars using petrol – by 26 and 17 %, respectively, but, when burnt, one litre of diesel oil releases 2.7 kg of CO2, while one litre of petrol produces 2.4 kg of this gas.

The larger the engine displacement of an automobile, the higher its fuel consumption and CO2 emission.

The larger the automobile mass, the higher the fuel consumption and CO2 emission. When mass is in- creased by 100 kg, fuel consumption and CO2 emission grow by about 6.5 % for petrol engines and by 7.1 % for diesel engines.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emission of automobiles with automatic transmission using petrol increase by about 19 %, compared to 35 % for such automobiles using diesel oil.

A storage battery produced with clean electricity reduces the electric car emission to 86.0 gCO2 e/km or 2.7- 3.0 times less.

Electric cars were operated on clean renewable electricity (hydro power); then, the GHG emission reduces to 11.0 tons of CO2 (47.0 g/km), which is between 5.0 and 5.4 times less than diesel and gasoline equivalents

At the worst, the battery storage is manufactured in China and used in electric vehicles operated on Poland
