🇷🇺🇪🇺 End of Gas Transit Through Ukraine: Loss of Russian Gas Hits Europe with Economic Slowdown, Inflation Surge, and Crisis Intensification – Reuters
Russia has begun reducing gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine on the final day of the transit agreement, Reuters reports.
Gas prices in Europe have already risen today as a result.
The loss of affordable Russian gas, despite being replaced by supplies from other sources, has caused a significant economic slowdown in Europe, driven up inflation, and worsened the cost-of-living crisis.
Ukraine is losing about $800 million annually in transit fees from Russia, while Gazprom is set to lose approximately $5 billion in gas sales to Europe through Ukraine.
Kiev previously announced that transit would cease at 7:00 a.m. on January 1.
After the transit ends, Russian gas supplies to Europe will continue via the TurkStream pipeline and as liquefied natural gas (LNG) by sea. According to the Russian government, gas supplies to Europe in 2024 have increased by 20% compared to 2023.
