What the "Iran experts" didn't tell the White House

With no end in sight, the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran remains deeply unpopular. On the day it started, only 27 percent of Americans supported the unprovoked military operation that interrupted ongoing diplomatic talks. Five months later, that number has changed little, with 35 percent of the 4,505 US adults polled by Reuters/Ipsos in early August saying they approved of the war.

Even those in the West who don't object on moral grounds continue to take issue with the obvious lack of strategy. Few are convinced Iran was really two weeks away from a nuclear weapon, and confusion about the reasons for war continues unabated...

"I'm so confused about why this bear is trying to eat me..." But decent article though. Give it a read.

On the 2024 campaign trail, Donald Trump's surrogates often highlighted the importance of revamping US foreign policy to focus on the threat of a rising China. After decades of failed nation building operations in the Middle East, figures like J.D. Vance argued, it was time to shift priorities and secure America's actual interests. Yet less than a year into Trump's second term, another war in the Middle East is pulling attention and resources away from the Asia Pacific region.

Trump's recent decision substantially to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea marks another shift away from the "pivot to Asia" strategy. Trump presented the decision as punishment for Seoul's refusal to aid the US war against Iran, and that seems to be the impression of South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun...

Another article by AC that takes everything at face value and goes "yeah bro totallyyyyy." Ugh. But I still think it's important to highlight them for our purposes.

Singapore launches world first data center powered by human brain cells

The 20 unit system reportedly uses lab grown brain cells integrated with silicon chips to generate computing power.

Singapore has launched the world's first independently operated data center using living human brain cells for some computing tasks, the medical school of the National University of Singapore (NUS Medicine) has said. The system consumes a fraction of the power of traditional computing hardware. The neurons are fed every three days and sustained by dedicated life support equipment.

NUS Medicine announced the prototype earlier this month in partnership with Singapore based data center operator DayOne and Australian biotech firm Cortical Labs. Housed at the university, the system is described by its developers as the world's first independently operated biologically integrated server rack...

EU unlocks new tranche of €90 billion loan to Ukraine for weapons

The approved transfer of €6.1 billion is expected to finance air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars.

...The European Commission has approved €6.1 billion ($7.1 billion) in new weapons purchases for Ukraine, the commission said on Monday. The tranche is part of a €90 billion loan allocated by Brussels for budgetary and military aid to Kiev earlier this year.

Facing mounting battlefield pressure, Kiev is increasingly pushing for faster aid disbursements as it relies heavily on foreign funding to plug a widening budget gap and sustain its war effort against Russia. Moscow has argued that Western military aid to Ukraine, which comes at the expense of ordinary taxpayers, only serves to prolong the conflict...

Iran vows to target "source and origin" of any aggression in warning to EU state

The warning follows the deployment of US KC-135 refueling tankers to a base in Bulgaria, which departed the EU state over the weekend after Tehran protested the move.

"...Regarding Bulgaria, we have stated our position. From the beginning, as many Bulgarian citizens themselves pointed out, this action was contrary to international law and constituted support for US aggression against Iran. We stated that such participation amounts to ...aggression," Baghaei said.

"There is no reason for any country to be concerned about us unless it has made its bases available to the aggressing party. Iran has the right to target the source and origin of an act of aggression. We will show no leniency in defending Iran," he added...

Diplomacy with a bear who's trying to eat you is kind of pointless. It's a bear. It wants to eat. Also, it doesn't really understand diplomacy. Hungry bears are notoriously bad at diplomacy.

"You don't know what's happening behind closed doors." No, I don't. And neither do you. We can only judge things based on the stuff we do know. Xi doesn't talk to me and neither does John Cena (I'm convinced he's actually in charge), but we can use our eyes to see and our ears to hear. And all I hear from China are dumb statements about "returning to dialogue" and about how "alarmed" they are about the lack of "muh international law" applications.

Is it possible China is playing 5D chess? Sure, sure. It's possible Trump is playing 5D chess too! But ya know, probably not. I think it's way more likely that things are the way we see and hear them.

I'd be absolutely delighted if I'm wrong here! If it turns out that 5D chess is indeed being played and that China really is "just waiting for the right moment bro," I'll be a happy man. But is that really the case?

China urges West Asia, Gulf parties to return to dialogue

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Monday that tensions in West Asia and the Gulf had once again reached a critical point, urging all parties to return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Kuwait's Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber al Ahmad Al-Sabah, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.

Wang said "the old script of recurring conflict should not be repeated" and stressed that reducing tensions should be the immediate priority.

He added that China was ready to deepen coordination with Kuwait and continue working toward restoring peace and stability across the region...

"Can't we just all get along bro." China really needs to pull their heads out of their asses and finally realize this isn't about "disagreements." It's about imperial expansion. All these "return to dialogue" speeches are useless and, at this point, kind of infuriating.

Tehran announces discovery of massive new gas field

The US and Israel have been threatening to hit all of Iran's power sites, while Tehran vows to collapse the global energy industry if such an attack is launched.

"...The discovery has added a significant new resource to Iran's national hydrocarbon reserves following efforts by the oil industry to identify and develop new deposits," said Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad.

"The field's recoverable gas reserves are equivalent to enough gas to supply one phase of the South Pars gas field for around 15 years," he added, referring to the discovered gas as "sweet gas," which is easily processed and is less corrosive, "reducing development and operating costs."

US Treasury set to expand secondary sanctions on Iran

The US Treasury is expected to expand the scope of secondary sanctions it can impose on companies and countries that continue doing business with Iran, as the Trump administration seeks to ratchet up economic pressure on Tehran, a source familiar with the plans told Reuters.

The move is intended as a final warning to countries to cut their commercial ties with Iran, in an effort to bring an end to the US Israeli war on Iran, the source said.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to unveil further details of the measures at a 1:00 PM EDT (17:00 GMT) news conference on Monday. According to the source, Bessent will also outline a wider economic pressure campaign against Iran that he and US President Donald Trump have called an "economic D-Day."

Bessent is expected to make clear that countries must choose between aligning with the US or risking having major companies and entities cut off from the dollar based financial system, the source said...

I'll say the same thing I said in response to Alexander Mercouris when he started celebrating the ICC's decision against Israel. A court's decision is only as relevant as its ability to enforce it. A court can order or "recommend" whatever it wants, but if it can't enforce the decision, the decision is meaningless.

I was told I didn't know what I was talking about and Alex is a lawyer "so he knows better than you" blah blah blah. Okay bro. While I'm not a lawyer, I wasn't born yesterday. There was no need to be a lawyer to predict the outcome. I'm not picking on Alexander, by the way. I'm just addressing the reaction I got from my audience back then.

The UN is nothing more than an extension of America's foreign policy and has been this way for a long time. Sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, but it's about as meaningless as the ICC's decisions.

Francesca Albanese said an international protection force in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza is "absolutely urgent."

"Conditions have been met": US prepares to remove Syria from terror list

...The extremist led Damascus government is set to be removed from the US terror list, reports on 22 August said - following months of direct cooperation with Washington on several matters, including a crackdown on Palestinian and Lebanese resistance, as well as direct talks with Israel.

Japan and the US just spent billions to try to save the yen. Why is it already losing ground?

Washington and Tokyo's unprecedented step to bolster the yen already appears to be unraveling.

On July 30, Japan's finance ministry reportedly sold as much as $59 billion to buy the Japanese currency, then at 40 year lows. Tokyo and Washington later confirmed they had acted together to bolster a weak yen. It was the first time they did so since 1998, and both US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama pledged to do it again if needed.

The yen began the year at 156 to the dollar, before steadily weakening to 163 by late July. Post intervention, the yen strengthened to 157 to the dollar, only to fall back to 159 by August 11, meaning the yen has already lost half of its post intervention gains...

It seems like the "intervention" (market manipulation) was very short lived. Good. Burn them all.

Iran vows "not a single drop" of oil will leave Gulf if region complies with US plan

Tehran has warned neighboring states it will close the Strait of Hormuz if they take part in Washington's economic pressure campaign.
