Want to help in a big way but don't really feel like leaving the comfort of your home? Good news - we have a solution just for you! The answer is learning pentesting AKA hacking. This short guide will get you started on the right path.
With the help of a couple hours of YT vids and some blog posts, you can become a cyber warrior. The 3 main subjects of your research will be: Kali Linux, shodan.io, and SCADA.
Kali Linux is a Linux distro built around the purpose of pentesting. It's essentially a suite of different hacking tools. You can install it on a USB drive and boot it on startup. There are many YT tutorials on how to use all of its tools. It's a formidable and versatile asset.
Shodan.io is an amazing website. Much like how Google is a search engine for websites connected to the internet, Shodan is a search engine for physical devices connected to the internet. If you're like us, your eyes should widen at the possibilities here. With Shodan, you can gain access to everything from security cameras to machines at factories, to industrial control systems. Each type and model of device has a particular search query (AKA "dork") to help you find it on there. There are large lists of dorks you can find on various blogs.
SCADA is a remote protocol/application for controlling industrial presses and machinery. That's everything from pressure gauges, to switches, to valves, to temperature settings, to speed, to pretty much everything, all controlled REMOTELY. We shouldn't have to spell it out any further. Like the other Shodan dorks, there are lists of dorks that will bring up various SCADA control panels.
So as you can see, having a working knowledge of Kali Linux, Shodan.io and SCADA will make you into an emerging cyber warrior. Now go have some fun! Hail Victory!
