БРОВИ КАК У СОВЫ
Но дело, конечно, не в них – а в том, что Грейс, оказывается, пришла вовсе не за сыром! То есть, она-то думала, что да – а вот все, кто в тот момент оказался в магазине, полагают иначе…
Chapter II
The seller turned out to be a tall man in a knitted sweater the colour of late November skies. His face was kind, and his eyebrows looked like they were borrowed from a serious owl.
“Maasdam?” he repeated, as if the very sound of the word surprised him. “Are you quite sure?”
Grace hesitated. “I mean… if you don’t have any, maybe just some cheddar?”
The tomato suddenly coughed. (Yes. Coughed.)
“I told you,” it said with a sigh, “she forgot again.”
The man in the sweater didn’t react to the tomato. Instead, he bent slightly forward, studying Grace’s eyes.
“Do you remember the door?” he asked softly.
“What door?” said Grace, beginning to feel slightly… fizzy. Like her thoughts had turned into lemonade. “The one behind the enchanted pickles.”
And just as he said that, the silver-haired woman appeared again — only now she wore yellow rubber gloves and held a feather duster that was snoring.
“Enough riddles,” she said, and looked at Grace with a smile that was far too knowing for someone with cleaning gloves. “Come, dear. You built that door yourself. Long ago. It's time to remember.”
“But I just came for cheese,” Grace whispered.
The tomato made a small snorting sound and muttered, “That’s what you always say.”
